A Beatles Contest Celebrating their Anniversary at Dodger Stadium

I hadn't originally planned on writing much about this coming weekends festivities at Dodger Stadium. Sure, I love the Beatles like any other red-blooded rock fan, and with the 45th anniversary of their concert at Dodger Stadium coming this Sunday it certainly was notable that this homestand would feature this iconic band. Nevertheless, I was going to allow this weekend to pass with little mention until I got a message from a marketing director at EMI with an offer I could not refuse.

As a way of promoting this coming Beatles themed weekend they have offered to provide 5 different Beatles CD's to give away as prizes to readers. I have no idea which record will be arriving, but as soon as they do you will find out. In the meantime, let's start off with a quick contest for one of the Beatles records. (Let's say the very first one in the box)

All you have to do to win is make a comment to this post to put yourself into a lottery. Please, just one entry per person for commenting. A winner will be selected through the handy Random.org site and posted on Friday by 7PM PST. (I'll go through 3 randomizations to get the winner.) Also, be sure to provide some means for me to get in contact with you if you win.

So get cracking! Write a comment, enter the drawing and maybe win a CD. WooHoo!

Oh, and if you want to pimp this on your own blog, through twitter or some other means please do. I'll give a second entry for spreading the word- be sure to let me know you did this in a comment, as well.

Oh yhea, BTW, below are some of the key events planned for this weekend.

The Dodgers will play Beatles music throughout the weekend series and at Tuesday’s game, including the songs from the 1966 concert set list.

Friday, August 26th
  • Friday Night Fireworks set to Beatles music
  • Bob Eubanks, former host of “The Newlywed Game” and the promoter that brought The Beatles to Dodger Stadium in 1966, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the game on Friday, August 26.
Sunday, August 28th
  • The day of the Beatles concert at Dodger Stadium 45 years ago.
Tuesday, August 30th
  • Cast of Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas will perform on the field before the game and throw out a ceremonial first pitch.
  • The cast will also perform an act from their GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas production. The performance will take place at approximately 7:00 p.m. on the field and will feature dancers and acrobats from “Drive My Car.”
Special ticket packages for Beatles and Cirque du Soleil fans are available for the Dodgers’ weekend series against the Rockies from August 26-28 as well as for Tuesday, August 30 when the Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres. Tickets in the Preferred Field Box section are available for $40 and come with a commemorative gift from LOVE. This limited edition offer is available only through www.dodgers.com/LOVE.

Don Drysdale's Club 53 Baseball Cup

Here is a great ceramic cup found on eBay from Don Drysdale's Club 53 restaurant and bar located in Hawaii- on the big island. I am not sure if this is a vintage piece since, apparently, the restaurant continued to exist until its closing earlier this year.
"We've had really good times both financially and in spirit, but like many things in life, all good things must come to an end," Kelly Drysdale said. "The lease was up for renewal, and the economy is really ugly -- that's the bottom line."
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever visited this place? I'd love to hear your experiences and pictures, if you got 'em.

Daily Conlon: 217 through 225

Here are todays Daily Conlon cards numbered 217 through 225. There are an assortment of players from around the league; including a couple of former Dodgers- George Watkins and Joe Vosmik. The card that I really wanted to focus on, though, is the "Trivia" card of Hall of Famer Mel Ott on the bottom row, far right.

Mell Ott had a 22 year Major League career with the New York Giants. As a result, it shouldn't be surprising that this slugger, with 511 career dingers, would be the answer to this trivia question. Who has hit the most home runs in 1 ballpark? As written on the reverse of the card.
"He hit 323 homers at the Polo Grounds, home of the New York Giants from 1911 until the team moved to San Francisco in 1958... the Polo Grounds were tailor made to his batting style. Only 257' down the right field line, the wall was a chip shot for a left handed hitter with Mel's power and consistency."
