Welcome to the Blue, Michael Young!

This news came right out of left field.  Via Ken Rosenthal on twitter:

So, the Dodgers pick up an infielder (2nd, SS & 3rd) from the Philadelphia Phillies.  Details about who we gave up has yet to leak, but it isn't much.  Via Bill Shaikin on twitter:

UPDATE:  We now know that the Dodgers traded AA lefty pitching prospect Rob Rasmussen, via Bill Shaikin on twitter.

As you'll remember, Rasmussen originally came to the Dodgers late last year in a trade with Houston for John Ely.

Young has had a decent season (and an even better career), but I just don't think he comes in to supplant any of our current starters. He's basically on par with Juan Uribe and Mark Ellis with the bat, but is much poorer with the glove.  Maybe he comes in to be a bat off the bench with an occasional start to rest our regulars.

What this also does is give us another in-house option for a third baseman next season.  Since Uribe is a free agent in 2014, Young provides another option since he is also a free agent.  Maybe, he gets a month to wow us and the Dodgers staff.

Below are Michael Young's career stats, via Baseball Reference.

From the Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today acquired third baseman Michael Young and cash considerations from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred Josh Beckett to the 60-day disabled list.

Young, 36, is a seven-time All-Star and won the 2005 American League batting title with the Texas Rangers, who he played for from 2000-2012. Young twice led the American League in hits (2005 & 2011) and his 2,359 career hits rank seventh among active players. Young owns a .300 career average in 1,949 games, while posting six 200-hit seasons in his career. The Covina native is a career .321 hitter with runners in scoring position.

Defensively, the 2008 AL Gold Glove winner at shortstop has appeared in 155 or more games in 10 of his 14 seasons and has posted a career .959 fielding percentage at third base.

In 126 games this season, his first with Philadelphia, the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder led the Phillies in hits and batted .276 (129-for-468) with eight home runs, 24 doubles and 41 RBI. On June 19 vs. Washington, Young eclipsed the 1,000-career RBI mark with a two-run home run.

Young has appeared in the postseason three times, including reaching the World Series in 2010 and 2011 as a member of the Rangers. In 34 career postseason games, he is batting .248 with three home runs and 19 RBI, including a five-RBI performance in Game 6 of the 2011 ALCS-clinching victory at Detroit. Young was also the 2006 All-Star Game MVP in Pittsburgh.

A graduate of both Bishop Amat Memorial High School in La Puente and UC Santa Barbara, Young was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft.

Since 2006, the Dodgers have made a number of key late August deals, acquiring such players as Marlon Anderson (2006 -.375 in 25 games), Ronnie Belliard (2009 - .351 in 24 games), Jon Garland (2009 -2.72 ERA in 6 starts) and Hall of Famers Greg Maddux (2009) and Jim Thome (2009).

Some Twitter Pics of Stars Wars Night at Dodger Stadium

As you likely now, last night was Star Wars Night at Dodger Stadium.  Many of the characters that made the movie franchise so great were on hand to enjoy the game.  Above, they pose on the field during pregame festivities.  Pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2013.  See more pics from Jon here.

Check out some more pics from last night that I grabbed from twitter below.

Then, Tommy had to get some face time with R2D2.  BTW, if you've always wanted to speak like R2D2 then you need to check out the R2D2 translator, here.

The Empire has arrived.

Aren't you a little short to be a Stormtrooper?

Beto Duran even got into the fun.

And, since it was Friday Night Fireworks check out the Star Wars themed show below.

On opportunities to use the ice in the days after the Kings-Ducks game:
I don’t think you’ll see any other major ticketed event because, again, the logistics of…the ice surface needs to go, I think, from Los Angeles to Vancouver, so it’d have to be out by Wednesday. So we are looking at additional ancillary types of events to potentially allow people to come into Dodger Stadium and participate with the ice condition, but again, that’s all pretty preliminary. The first stage is kind of getting through the timing and the schedule, and the next piece is now looking at things and opportunities for people to interact within a pretty unique environment. Our goal would be to line that stuff up and make certain announcements over the next couple months.

Welcome to the Blue, Edinson Volquez!

As many of you already know, the Dodgers signed recently released Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez.

Per Ken Rosenthal on twitter a couple of days ago.

Well, he is now officially a Dodger.  Volquez was placed on the the Dodgers roster this afternoon and Chris Withrow has been temporarily optioned to Albuquerque.  I say temporarily because the MLB rosters expand on September 1st, so I would expect Withrow to be back in Dodger Blue very quickly.  (UPDATE: For those wondering, the earliest Withrow can be back on the Dodgers is Tuesday)  (UPDATE II:  Also, even with Withrow going to AAA at this time, he would still qualify for the postseason.  The rules are that anybody within the Dodgers organization by August 31st is eligible for the postseason roster.  So, theoretically, Moylan, Guerra and Lee are also eligible.)

As for what Volquez will be doing for us, it doesn't appear he'll be starting games - at least for now.  Per Bill Shaikin on twitter:

Eric Stephen of True Blue LA on twitter expands even futher:

Volquez has arguably been the worst starting pitcher in all of Baseball this season, so he obviously has a lot to work on.  He throws 4 pitches, a low to mid 90's fastball, a two-seam fastball that clocks also in the low 90's, a mid 80's changeup and a mid 70's curveball.  Unfortunately, command of those pitches have been an issue.  Hopefully, the Dodgers pitching staff can correct his problems.

BTW, as Howard Cole of LA Weekely noted, Edinson Volquez once tested positive for PED's back in 2008.  I should also note that Volquez used to have really crazy hair, as evidenced by the below photo from his time as a member of the Reds.  Considering the loose styles in the current Dodger clubhouse, I think a change in grooming might be in order for our new righty out of the pen.  Grow the dew back, Edinson!

As you can see, I made a Dodgers fantasy card for Volquez at the very top of this post.  I used a template for a 1962 Topps vintage Baseball card.

Below are his career stats, via Baseball Reference.

UPDATE: From a Dodgers Press Release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today signed free agent right-handed pitcher Edinson Volquez to a one-year contract. To make room for Volquez on the active roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Chris Withrow to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Volquez, 30, has a 53-50 career record with a 4.77 ERA in nine Major League seasons with the Rangers (2005-07), Reds (2008-11) and Padres (2012-13). The native of the Dominican Republic was selected as a National League All-Star with Cincinnati in 2008, when he ranked among the league leaders in wins (17, T-3rd), winning percentage (.739, 17-6, T-3rd), ERA (3.21, 8th), opponents' batting average (.232, 5th) and strikeouts (206, T-2nd).

The six-foot, 225-pounder, who was the Padres' Opening Day starter in 2012 and 2013, went 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts for San Diego this year prior to being designated for assignment on Aug. 25 and released two days later.

Volquez, who will wear uniform number 30, was originally signed by Texas as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 29, 2001 and has twice been traded, going from Texas to Cincinnati following the 2007 season as part of the Josh Hamilton deal and then to San Diego after the 2011 season as part of a five-player deal.

Withrow, who has had two stints with the Dodgers this season, posted a 2-0 record with a 3.38 ERA (9 ER/24.0 IP) in 17 appearances.

A New Vin Scully Baseball Card is Available

It's about time.

After nearly 65 years in the broadcast booth Vin Scully finally has a base card to call his own.  Officially released this past Wednesday, Panini put out their 2013 Cooperstown set and it includes Vin Scully in the base set.

He is card #65, which is appropriate since he'll be returning as the Dodgers television broadcaster for a record 65th year next season.

Even better, since he is in the base set there are numerous parallels available.  The normal card is a dark brown bordered card, and there are another 6 different parallel cards to chase after.  Featured below is the "Blue Crystal Shard" parallel card numbered to just 499 copies.

Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida is Back

The Guggenheim folks continue to build Dodger fan goodwill by being the exact opposite of Frank McCourt.

Word came down yesterday that the former Spring Training home of the Dodgers in Vero Beach, Florida will make an important change.  Once dubbed Vero Beach Sports Village, it will now pay homage to it's important past by being renamed to “Historic Dodgertown – Vero Beach, Florida.”

Check out this great photo of former Dodger owner Peter O'Malley with the new signage below.

This is great news.  I had several opportunities to visit this complex when the Dodgers had Spring Training there several years ago, and I enjoyed every single minute of it.  The facility was a quaint homespun kind of place that made me feel like I was at a little league ballpark- except with a bunch of seats.  It was homey and personal, and you couldn't help falling in love with it.

Now, after several years of having McCourt refuse to allow them to acknowledge their Dodger past, the new owners, along with MLB's help, worked to make sure it maintains its important lineage.

Per a press release:
O’Malley has signed a licensing agreement enabling his partnership to utilize the new name in cooperation with the Dodgers and Major League Baseball. O’Malley also unveiled a new Historic Dodgertown – Vero Beach, Florida logo.

“We appreciate the extraordinary cooperation of Dodger President Stan Kasten and the Dodger organization in recognizing the significance of this unique site,” said O’Malley, the Dodger president from 1970-1998. “We also are grateful to Major League Baseball for working with us, perpetuating the history and tradition of Historic Dodgertown and what it has meant to the game for decades.”
Something I had forgotten about:
In January 2012, O’Malley saved Dodgertown and formed a partnership including his sister Terry O’Malley Seidler, former co-owner of the Dodgers, former Dodger star pitchers Chan Ho Park and Hideo Nomo and MiLB to manage the property.
Park and Nomo's ties to the franchise appear to be as strong as ever.

Go ahead and check out Dodgertown's new website here.

And here are some great quotes from some Dodger legends about the Dodgers former Spring Training home.
Dodgers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully:
“No other place in the world holds as many memories for me as Dodgertown.”

Dodgers’ Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda:
“I remember the last time I walked off the field at Dodgertown, knowing that I would probably never return. I thought of the 60 years of going there for spring training. It’s the greatest spring training complex in the United States. I’ll never love anything the way I loved going to Dodgertown.”

Dodgers’ Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax:

“Spring training at Dodgertown was something very special to me because of its rich history and the people who experienced Dodgertown.  It was a wonderful time.  We were isolated there and players spent a lot of time together and we grew very close. When I got there, I had the opportunity to meet and play with so many great players—Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe, Carl Furillo and on and on.  These were all the folks I rooted for in Brooklyn.  I have so many great memories.  Dodgertown is truly a historic place.”

Two-time National League batting champion Tommy Davis:
“When I think of Dodgertown, the first thing that comes to mind is the nine fields and that we had to run to every one of them. And I loved the great food. Seriously, I’ll always treasure the opportunity I had to get to know guys from different parts of the country and to develop a great camaraderie with them. I was young when I was there and I had to learn about a lot of things, so the opportunity to absorb all that information was something I loved.”

Dodgers’ All-Star pitcher and ESPN broadcaster Orel Hershiser:
“My time at Dodgertown was priceless. Doing what you love in a place where everything is first class. Thanks to the O’Malley family!!!”

Dodgers pitching great Fernando Valenzuela:
“I get very emotional when I think about Dodgertown and my first spring training. It was great for a rookie who just wanted to play baseball. It has everything you could possibly want to get ready for the season. You can eat, sleep and train there and never have to go anywhere else. It brings back a lot of good memories for me.”

Former Dodgers All-Star shortstop Maury Wills:
“I first went to Dodgertown shortly after I turned 18. I had grown up in the projects in Washington, D.C. and didn’t know anything about the world and had no clue about life. My growth as a man started at Dodgertown. I got to live my passion for baseball and it all started when I got to go to Dodgertown.”

Dodgers’ two-time All-Star Game MVP Steve Garvey:
"With Dodgertown, the O'Malley family created the ultimate environment from which to cultivate, develop, and nurture their ideal of what a professional baseball franchise should be."

Former Dodgers All-Star second baseman, major league manager and now Dodgers’ coach Davey Lopes:
“Dodgertown was ahead of its time as a baseball training complex. Dodgertown was Vero Beach. It was like a town. It had everything. You never had to leave the grounds.”

Former Dodgers All-Star shortstop, coach and manager Bill Russell:
“I always looked forward to going to Dodgertown for spring training.  It was a wonderful atmosphere and put you in a great frame of mind to start a new baseball season and give you the confidence you needed to try to win a championship.”

Former Dodgers All-Star third baseman and 1981World Series tri-MVP Ron Cey:

“Dodgertown was the ideal spring training facility for us. It gave us a great comfort level with everything that was going on. Everything you needed to succeed at baseball was at your fingertips and you didn’t have to worry about anything else, other than preparing for the season and hopefully winning a championship.”

Former Dodgers outfielder and now team broadcaster Rick Monday:

“I had images of Dodgertown from listening to and watching games being broadcast from there when I was a kid growing up in Santa Monica. When I was traded to the Dodgers, I got a chance to visit this magical place. Dodgertown was the Disneyland of baseball. With its fields, living quarters, dining room, lounge and hallways filled with the history of the Dodgers, it had great facilities to get you ready for the championship season. I fell so in love with it, I now make my home in Vero Beach.”

All-time Dodgers’ pinch-hitting great Manny Mota:
“Dodgertown is a very, very special place. Just hearing the word `Dodgertown’ brings back a lot of great memories. I cherish the time I got to spend there with Walter O’Malley and the entire O’Malley family. I have great respect and admiration for the O’Malley family. A few years ago I asked my wife where she wanted to go on vacation and she said `Dodgertown.”

Member of Dodgers’ 1988 World Championship team Mickey Hatcher:
“Having the opportunity to train at Dodgertown matured me as a player and as an individual. It taught me a lot about what baseball is really about. Being around Peter O’Malley and his family brought a great closeness, and getting to meet the players I played with and those from the past and sharing stories with them was an unbelievable experience.”

Former Dodger first baseman and now FOX broadcaster Eric Karros:

“I grew up in a household where my dad was a huge Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid and I heard about Dodgertown and had seen pictures of it, but as a player that’s where you really understood the history of the Dodgers. You realized you were a part of more than just the ballclub you were playing on at that particular time.  As a player at Dodgertown, the thing I remember most is the interaction with the fans and the accessibility the fans had, unlike any other spring training site. It made for a very intimate environment. It was very peaceful, very calming. It was baseball in its purest sense.”

Retired MLB umpire Bruce Froemming:

“To start the spring at Dodgertown was a huge perk for me before those long seasons. Everyone there treated me like a part of the family. It was the best and I’ll never forget those years.”

Blog Kiosk: 8/30/2013 - Dodgers Links - Hershiser's Streak, Chass Speaks with Scully and Kershaw's Ping Pong Event

Chris Olds at Beckett recently shared some preview picks from 2014 Topps Museum Collection; including the above Yasiel Puig jersey nameplate box-topper.  Check out his post for more preview pics.
  • Murray Chass shares his recent discussion with Vin Scully in his latest piece entitled, "TALE OF THE ANCIENT BASEBALL DUO".
“It’s not just the game but I love the roar of the crowd,” Scully said. “I enjoy going to the ball park and seeing and hearing the people. I say hello to the women who run the elevator and the guards outside the press box. I respect and admire the new management. It’s difficult walking away from it.”
"That proved to me, hands down, Honey is the most valuable member of the organization," said Ellis. "I didn't realize, until I had his full plate of preparation, all the work he had. I hear pitchers say Rick Honeycutt is the best pitching coach they've ever worked with. That makes me feel I'm working with the best. There's nobody else I'd want to learn from."
“I was surprised that he acted like that,” Brito said of Puig. “I think the manager did a good thing to take him out. I think he did the right thing, because you’re supposed to play harder. That’s what you get paid for.”

A Vin Scully Cards and Collectibles Checklist

Since hearing the news that Vin Scully would be staying in the Dodgers broadcast booth for another year, I just haven't been able to wipe this smile off my face.  Heck, even as the Dodgers play less-than-par Baseball my grin just gets wider.

So, in order satisfy my Vin Scully addiction, I thought I would go through a checklist of the various Scully cards and memorabilia items available in the marketplace.  I'll go through the known cards (at least to me) and other collectibles below.  I will refrain from showing the two recent bobbleheads since we already know about those, and the various records that exist (save one Union Oil set).  Also, I can't claim that this is a totally complete comprehensive list (there's likely more out there than I'm aware of), so please let me know if I missed anything.

To start with, I'll feature the known memorabilia items.  Then, I'll move on to postcards featuring Vin Scully.  Lastly, I'll show you the handful of trading cards with Vin Scully on them.  Click on any pic to embiggen.
---------------
(1958-60 Volpe)
The earliest Vin Scully collectible I am aware of is the 1958-1960 LA Dodgers Premium Picture shown on the left.  (UPDATE: It's now the 2nd oldest Scully item I know of - see update below featuring a 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers broadcasters postcard)  Originally drawn by Nicholas Volpe, it is a pencil-style portrait of the Dodgers broadcast team: Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett.  It measures 8.5" x 11" and were sold as a complete set of 16 portraits (15 of which are Dodger players) at souvenir stands at the Coliseum.

This set is fairly scarce.  Even when considering that they were sold over a three year period, complete sets, let alone individual pictures, are very rarely seen.  In fact, I can't recall ever seeing a complete set of 16 for sale.  The last time I saw the Scully/Doggett for sale was in 2008 on eBay, and it sold for a little over $52.00.  On reflection, that price might have been a steal.
---------------
The Dodgers connection to Union Oil is well known to a lot of us old-timers.  At one time, beyond centerfield in the Dodger Stadium parking lot, stood a Union 76 gas station to help fans with their gasoline needs.  On top of that, just about every summer you could count on Dodgers promotional give-aways at Union Oil.

(1960 Union Oil booklet)
In 1960 Union Oil teamed up with the Dodgers to create and distribute Dodger Family Booklets.  These were 5.5" x 7.5" little books with 16 pages devoted to the individual featured.  There were 23 different books made in 1960, and Dodger broadcasters Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett had one of them.  See it on the right.

(1961 Union Oil)
The following year (1961) Union Oil issued a second series of booklets featuring the Dodgers, and Scully/Doggett again received their own book.  See it on the left.

These booklets are rather plentiful, but (for whatever reason) do not show up very often on eBay.  I recall going to the last National Sports Collectors Convention in Anaheim and seeing a dealer with large stacks of complete sets for sale.  So, I know there are stockpiles of this stuff sitting somewhere.

The Vin Scully/ Jerry Doggett booklet is likely to sell anywhere between $10 to $20 a piece, depending on how many collectors happen to notice it.  Below are a couple pics of the inside of a 1961 booklet.  (UPDATE:  Check out a complete scan of every page of the Scully/Doggett booklet here.)
---------------
I wasn't sure if I should include this next item in this checklist, but I figured that since Vin's mug is displayed it was worth mentioning.  In 1966 Union Oil issued a series of 33 1/3 records featuring Vin Scully interviewing several Dodger players and staff.  As you can see below, a small portrait of Vin Scully is on the corner of the record sleeve.  The drawings were originally drawn by Nicholas Volpe.  I am unsure exactly how many different records exist in the set.
(1966 Union Oil Record)
---------------
This next item looks like a postcard, but it's not.  In 1971 Ticketron issued a set of 20 postcards-sized schedule cards of the Dodgers, and one of them featured Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett.  See it below.

The reverse of the card includes a schedule, promotional dates and an advertisement for their ticket service.  They measure 4" x 6".  The Scully/Doggett card can be purchased for about $5.00, and a complete set of 20 recently sold for $41.52.
(1971 Ticketron Dodgers)

---------------
This next item might be the most well known of all Vin Scully collectibles in the market.  Produced as an promotional item for Union Oil, a pastel portrait, originally drawn by Nicholas Volpe, of Vin Scully was created.  They measure 8.5" x 11", and feature a biography of the artist and Vin Scully's Hall of Fame Induction speech on the reverse.  These portraits are very affordable.  You should be able to pick up a Scully for just a couple of bucks.

In my mind, this is a must have for any Vin Scully fan.  I've included a pic of both the front and reverse in the photos below.

DODGERS POSTCARDS
---------------
UPDATE:
I was just notified of an very early Vin Scully postcard that would probably rank as his rookie card.  Heck, it also happens to be a rookie card for Hall of Fame broadcaster Red Barber.  See it below.
(pic via Old Cardboard)

It is an 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers broadcasters postcard with Red Barber, Connie Desmond and Vin Scully.  Wow!
 ---------------
This next section deals with the various Dodgers issued postcards of Vin Scully.  Unfortunately, I was a little unclear whether a couple of the postcards examples I have where actually made for the Dodgers (and not an outside source), so if you happen to have more information please pass it along.  Postcards are typically very affordable.  You should be able to get any one of the postcards shown below for about $10 to $20 a piece.
(1962-63 LA Dodgers Postcard)

The post card above was issued by the Dodgers both individually and as a postcard folding booklet from 1962 to 1963.  They were printed by Plastichrome and distributed by Mitock and Sons.  The folding booklet postcard has a white border.  The Scully/Doggett postcard has a designated number of P49774.  Postcards with an facsimile autograph of both Scully and Doggett on the reverse also exist.

For the first time, in 1966, the Dodgers issued a postcard that only featured Vin Scully.  See it below.  It has a designated number of P69885 that is located in the stamp box at the upper-right of the reverse.
(1966 LA Dodgers Postcard)
(Reverse of the above postcard)

Below is the 1967 Dodgers postcard of Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett.  It It has a designated number of P70454 that is located in the stamp box at the upper-right of the reverse.   There are facsimile autographs of both Scully and Doggett on the reverse.
(1967 LA Dodger Postcard)
(1967 LA Dodger Postcard)

This is where my knowledge of postcards gets a little shaky.

I believe the below post card is from 1973.

And I believe the postcard below of Scully, Doggett and a sliding Willie Crawford is from 1975.

UPDATE: I have come across two new NBC-related postcards featuring both Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola.  Unfortunately, I do not know the date of issuance.  Check them out below.

---------------
BASEBALL CARDS
---------------

Unfortunately, there are very few Baseball cards of our Hall of Fame broadcaster.  In fact, it appears that it has only been in the past couple of years that the card manufacturers even saw it fit to make one of him.  See them below.  (Update: I have since added a 2004 Fleer card I was not previously aware of)  All of the autographed cards can sell for hundreds of dollars.
