Check out some more Jackie Robinson Cards and Memorabilia

As I promised earlier today, I scanned some more items that I have tucked away in my Jackie Robinson collection.  Check them out below.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

The below cards is a 1948 R346 Blue Tint card. This is one of several different oddball rookie cards that exist of him.  These cards are blank backed and were issued in uncut strips.  So every card is hand-cut.

Below is a 1949 Old Gold Cigarettes advertising card.

Below is one of the 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson cards.  Unfortunately, my card is very beat up.

This next card is one of my favorites.  Below is a 1967 Topps Retirado Venezuelan card.  These cards are very scarce and notoriously hard to get in good shape.  A vast majority of cards made for the Venezuelan market were glued into scrapbooks; hence the paper loss on the reverse.

Below is a 1951 "Batter Up" Jackie Robinson Baseball game.

Below is a WNBC jumbo postcard of Jackie Robinson.

Here is a 1973 Hall of Fame Picture Pack photograph of Jackie.

For the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the set that the below Robinson card belongs to.  I know it was made in 1977.

I am also not quite sure where the below two collector move cells come from.  As you can see, a couple of movie film cells were cut and inserted into these cards.  Unfortunately, I was unable to get a better scan of the cells.  The tops cell features Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider and Jackie Robinson holding a very large bat, and the bottom cell is of Roy Campanella and Jackie.

The next group of vintage photos are promotional movie stills for "The Jackie Robinson Story."

The next three photos are some candid photos related to "The Jackie Robinson Story."  Directly below, Jackie checks out actor Chill Theodore Wills hat.

Jackie is greeted by Motion Picture Center gatesman Dick Dreis.

Jackie interview with Los Angeles sports announcer Hal Berger.

The last photo below features Rachel Robinson at Cooperstown as they announce the Jackie Robinson Stamp in 1982.

Vintage Jackie Robinson Memorabilia that Features Baseball Fighting Discrimination

Several years ago, at the start of this blog, I shared numerous items from my Jackie Robinson collection.  With today being an official holiday throughout the league, I figured I would do that again since it had been so long.  Unfortunately, as I searched out those older post to pull out the pics I realized that the quality of the scans were remarkably horrible.  Nevertheless, a couple of pics looked fine, so here they are below.  Thankfully, it was a couple of vintage 1950's era ink blotters that are perfect for the day.  Check them out below.  BTW, when I get home tonight I'll scan some other items in order to share them.

The below blotter features Mel Allen, Joe Dimaggio, Sid Gordon, Bob Feller and Jackie Robinson.  It says:
"...and remember fans... in America HITS are made by men of EVERY race, religion and color"

"Keep pitching... Keep swinging... AGAINST racial and religious prejudice."

Dodgers Vintage Memorabilia at REA Auctions - The Oddball Stuff

This is my final post featuring Dodger memorabilia that can be found in REA's Spring auction.  Go here to take a look at my past post on this auction.  Below, I feature some of the more oddball Dodger collectibles.

This first item is entirely new to me.  It is a complete set of ten wrappers from a 1948 Blony Bubble Gum series entitled "Roger the Rookie Dodger."  It's a long lost Bowman issue.  From the auction description:
This set features baseball lessons presented by the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers spring-training staff and Manager Leo Durocher presented in "comic book form" printed directly on the wrappers... Blony Bubble Gum was the primary brand of gum used by Bowman with their early trading cards, similar to the Bazooka brand utilized by Topps (interestingly, for two decades after it purchased Bowman in 1956, Topps continued to use Blony and Bazooka simultaneously). We have known about this very set for decades but it has never been documented in books (including The Standard Catalog) let alone checklisted, and we can find no record of the set having actually been issued. The idea that the set was never issued is consistent both with its extreme rarity and with the fact that these large wax wrappers (each are 7 x 12 inches) are perfectly flat "proof" wrappers that have obviously never been wrapped around gum as intended.

Below are a couple of great vintage Dodger postcards.  At top is an advertising postcard for Bowman's Cocktail Lounge in New York.  Featured are Roy Campanella, Dan Bankhead, Don Newcombe, and Jackie Robinson with Lawson Bowman.  Below that is a business postcard for Roy Campanella's Wine and Liquors in New York City.

The clubhouse sign below hung at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, circa 1960's.

Below is a 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers Tour of Japan Airplane Bag and money purse.

This might be the best item of all.  Below is a circa 1950's Ebbets Field usher/vendor's cap and badge (pin).

Blog Kiosk: 4/15/2014 - Dodger Links - Happy Jackie Robinson Day!

Today is Jackie Robinson Day.  All of the Dodger "42" jersey's are ready to go, pic above via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2014Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider has a video of his Hall of Fame Induction speech.
So this represents something of a dichotomy for what the 2014 Gonzalez will be. He’s connecting less, which is not great, but he’s crushing more when he does, which is a step forward. But there’s also this: evidence that Gonzalez’ approach really has changed.
  • Ken Gurnick at MLB.com, "Preparation gives Dodgers' catchers an edge: Honeycutt and Ellis make sure Los Angeles' backstops have plan of attack."
"The first day of a series, each of us goes over everything individually, taking notes and there isn't much talking. After a break around 3, the four of us go over it together to create bullet points on each hitter to take into the pitcher's meeting so it can be presented in a simple, uncluttered way. We write down what resonates with each pitcher, what might be important about a hitter that maybe is different for a reliever than a certain starter. After that, the starting pitcher and the catcher for that game and Rick go over the individualized game plan."
  • Dodger Penguin provides a recap to the Bill Madlock signing this past Sunday.
  • Paul Lukas at Uni Watch writes a fascinating article on this Jackie Robinson Day.  He lets us know about other African American's who worked as trainers for MLB clubs prior to Jackie.
