Today is Jackie Robinson Day. Naturally, I had to find a photo of Jackie to share here, and I think I found the perfect one. Featured above are two young kids, Jackie and wife Rachel, having a dance in Puerto Rico in 1950. I'm unsure of the circumstances surrounding the photograph. Pic via Jorge Colon-Delgado in twitter.
BTW, Dave Roberts had this to say about today, via Doug Padilla at ESPN:
“[Newcombe] was his roommate,” Roberts said. “As much as [Newcombe] wants to talk about Jackie and his story, and what he went through, and Maury [Wills] sharing stories, Manny Mota, I’ll listen. Just to be back in a Dodgers uniform and in this capacity, to have these guys who I have known for a decade and sometimes even hear the same stories, that’s what’s great about it. It’s like it’s the first time I’ve ever heard them. But [Friday] will be a special day for sure.”Below are more links to check out:
- Why I love Vin Scully. Via Mike Oz at Big League Stew, "Listen up, Vin Scully is about to school you on the number 13."
- Via Sal Cacciatore at Number Fire, "Kenta Maeda Is Dominating Major League Baseball."
Maeda has gotten opponents to swing at a third of pitches out of the zone (ranking 15th), according to FanGraphs, explaining the low walk rate despite the comparatively low frequency of strikes (he also ranks 30th in terms of in-zone swing rate, as he is tied for the 13th-highest overall swing rate in the Majors).
On the swings out of the zone, opponents are making contact at a below-average rate (56.7%, relative to the big-league average of 58.6%), and this has helped Maeda post one of the league’s better whiff rates.
- Congrats, Chris Hatcher! He announced the birth of a brand new baby yesterday, via twitter. His name is Jensen Thomas Hatcher and he came in at 7 lb 5 oz, 20". He has been put paternity list. Left-handed reliever Adam Liberatore has been recalled in his place.
- Via Doug Padilla at ESPN, "Dodgers' Kenta Maeda expresses concern for quake victims in native Japan."
“I am concerned about their well-being in general,” Maeda said. “I don’t know the details too much of exactly what happened.”
- This guy might have the greatest job ever! Via Philip Pritchard, the Keeper of the Cup, at The Players Tribune, "Because It’s the Cup." He shares a bunch of great stories that, even if you're not a fan of the game, you should check out.
There are 49 Super Bowl trophies out there. There is only one Stanley Cup. You don’t win it. You borrow it. But your name is etched on it for all of history.
- I approve this backyard makeover.
