Blog Kiosk: 7/21/2016 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

In honor of his pending induction this weekend I made a couple of custom fantasy Baseball cards last night featuring Mike Piazza in a old Albuquerque Dukes uniform.  I used photos recently shared by Bay Area freelance photographer Brad Mangin the other day.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodger History:  In 1956 Junior Gilliam sets a major league record by handling 12 assists at second base. Also on this day, Pee Wee Reese recorded his 2,000th career hit.
  • Via Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA; "The night Vin Scully was overshadowed."
  • Oy Vey!  ICYMI: Chris Hatcher was placed on the 15-day DL (strained left oblique), and infielder Charlie Culberson was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
  • WTF!  Alex Wood has gone under the knife, via a tweet by the Dodgers:

"With the way it flared up, it's more of an indication that surgery is more of a possibility," Roberts said.

Roberts said Kershaw is currently shut down from baseball activity while he waits for his back to "calm down."
“(Scouting Lux) was one of the most wonderful experiences I ever had because this boy was dedicated to being the best he could be,” said Couston. “He made himself a first-rounder with some help along the way from (his uncle) Augie (Schmidt). It was a joy to watch him.”

Couston added that he basically watched Lux grow up right before his eyes from the start of the scouting process about 18 months ago through his selection by the Dodgers.

“He became a man in a year and a dedicated baseball player,” he said. “I was very impressed.”
  • Via Maury Brown at Forbes; "With 2016 Season Half Over, TV Ratings For MLB Shows RSN's Ruling In Prime Time."  With the Dodgers still without region-wide distribution for SportsNet LA they find themselves at the bottom of ratings list.
  • Via Nick Diunte at Baseball Happenings; "Clyde Parris, Negro Leaguer and Panamian baseball great passes away at 93."  Parris also played within the Brooklyn Dodgers minor league system, and made it all the way to their top club in Montreal.
The Dodgers promoted Parris to AAA Montreal in 1955, pushing him ever so close to the major leagues. Making good on his promotion, he led the International League with a .321 batting average in 1956. Despite his outstanding performance, the Dodgers didn’t bring him up to get even a taste of major league life.

“I went to AAA after leading Class-A in hitting,” he said. “In 1956, I led AAA in hitting. A lot of people thought I was going to be called up. Deep down inside, I didn't expect to go to the big leagues, I guess because of my age. I was 34, kind of old, right?”
