Blog Kiosk: 7/26/2016 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

As a departure from the mundane, Bobby Morgan is seen in the vintage press photo (via an eBay listing) above aiming at his target during spring training, 1950.  Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Bobby Morgan, Brooklyn Dodgers rookie infielder from Oklahoma City, Okla., sets his sights on a bat during training at the Dodgers Vero Beach, Fla., spring training camp. March 5.  Morgan was voted the Most Valuable Player in the International League last year while playing with Montreal.  He compiled a batting average last year of .337.
Bobby did make the club as the teams starting third baseman in 1950, but didn't enjoy the same success he had with the Royals.  He batted just .226 on the year.  Thereafter, he became primarily an utility guy on the diamond for the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodger History:  In 1951 Dodgers outfielder Jim Russell becomes the first player in Major League history to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in a single game for the second time in a career.  In 1990 Mike Sharperson became the first player in LA Dodgers history to start at every infield position during a season.
  • Happy Birthday, Hoyt Wilhelm!
  • Philip Fountain at Dodgers Nation made a couple of fantastic Dodgers-themed graphics worth checking out.  Here's one featuring Vin Scully, and here's another making note of "Snark" week.
  • Via Nick Krueger at MLB.com; "Toles bringing energy to Dodgers since callup."
"As the league starts to learn a little bit more, he's going to have to make some adjustments, whatever they might be," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "He's not afraid and he's fun. I like his energy."
“It feels good. Obviously it feels a little rusty,” Hernandez said, after playing a full nine innings in center field for the Quakes. “I missed a month and got two games in the AZL and I was a little scared to get to hit four times in a game, but it was good to be back here in California again to get a game and feeling healthy.”
  • Today's Baseball America Prospect Report makes note of Dodgers slugger Johan Mieses:
The 21-year-old Dominican has struggled this season, striking out 105 times in 325 at-bats. But on Monday, he showed his plus power, blasting two homers and driving in six runs in high Class A Rancho Cucamonga’s 12-1 win over Inland Empire (Angels). Mieses now has 16 homers, second in the California League. The Dodgers consider Mieses a five-tool talent but he has some inefficiencies in his batting stance that get him out of position to hit.
  • Over the weekend the Dodgers won, for the second year in a row, an LA Area Emmy Award and SportsNet LA won four awards.  Per a Dodgers press release:
The Dodgers earned the Emmy® Award for Sports Feature, the Dodgers Holiday Story featuring Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully and executive produced by Greg Taylor, who has directed the Dodgers’ production team since 2010.  In addition to Scully and Taylor, others who worked on the award winning feature included producer Erick Cesar Vazquez, editor Scott Pellman and cameraman Julian Gooden.
...
The Dodgers’ television network won four additional awards.  SNLA won the Emmy® for Live Sports Coverage for the Dodgers Opening Day.  Videographer David Strumpf, who is instrumental in the success of the “Backstage Dodgers” show, earned the Emmy® for outstanding videographer, single camera, programming.

The other programs winning awards included:  Lead-Off L.A. won the Emmy® for top sports series—programming (live broadcast) and the Dodgermentary: Welcome to Dodgertown won the Emmy® for Sports Special.
