The former player who drew the most attention in the dugout and on the field was manager Dave Roberts, under immense pressure while playing in front of his players. In the first inning, Roberts hit a leadoff single to center off Valenzuela and advanced to third in the next two at-bats.

"Thank goodness this game's only two innings," Roberts said. "I'm going to try to come out of it OK, not end up on the training table. If I do, I'm going to take a lot of grief from the players. That's kind of more important than getting a hit today."

• This Day in Dodger History:  In 1958 the Dodgers, in their 35th home game ever in Los Angeles, reached the one million attendance mark.  At Ebbets Field they drew 1,028,258 fans total all season the year prior.  In 1974 Dodgers reliever Mike Marshall appeared in his 13th consecutive game, setting a major league record.  The streak also ended on this day when he didn't make an appearance during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. In 1993 Don Drysdale died of a heart attack in Montreal after broadcasting the Dodgers’ game against the Expos.
• Eric Stephen at True Blue LA has the rundown on the financial numbers related to the recent Bud Norris Trade; "Dodgers take on roughly $3.8 million in Bud Norris trade."
• ICYMI:  The Dodgers officially placed Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day DL yesterday.  They also placed Joc Pederson on the DL with a sprained right AC joint (retroactive to June 29).
• Via Jack Baer at MLB.com; "Next step for Kershaw: Planning rehab program." 

"The training staff says he's responded well," manager Dave Roberts said. "Feels better after getting the epidural. As far as timeline to come back, we don't know."

While the idea of significant time without Kershaw taking the mound every fifth day is a nightmare scenario for the Dodgers and the team's fans, you would be hard pressed to find anyone more eager to see Kershaw return than the ace himself.

"I'm going to be very impatient," Kershaw said. "The DL sucks, there's no getting around it. It's awful. It's worse coming to the field every day. Whether you do or not, you just feel like you let the team down by not pitching."

“This is right where I wanted to be,” he said on the eve of his 2016 debut.

“I was the one who said, ‘Let’s go.’ I felt like I had gotten to a place where I felt confident about being here. And if there was a need for me, I said they could put me in. I brought it up when we met a few days ago. I said listen, ‘If you guys are fine with it being time, I’m ready to go.'”

• Corey Seager was named the NL Rookie of the Month of June.  Per a press release:

Dodgers rookie shortstop Corey Seager led Major League rookies in hitting (.343, 35-for-102), hits, home runs (8), runs (20), total bases (69), and slugging (.676), while pacing National League rookies with a .409 on-base percentage and eight doubles. The 22-year-old slugger’s 13 RBI were the third-most among NL rookies last month. This is his first career monthly award, and the first for a Dodgers rookie since Alex Guerrero (April 2015).

Dan Saldana, Jacqui’s husband and a lifelong Dodger fan, looks so much like the Dodger third baseman that he was working out at the gym once and a little boy started recording him with the thought that it was Turner.

• Baseball America's recent email prospect report said this of Dodgers catching prospect Will Smith:

The 32nd overall pick last month made his Midwest League debut Saturday and it was a smashing success. The Louisville product had a two-run single that tied the game as low Class A Great Lakes beat Bowling Green (Rays) 5-3. Smith slashed .321/.394/.428 at Rookie-level Ogden in seven games before the Dodgers felt he’d caught to the league and passed it, needing a new challenge.
