Brandon McCarthy sure did pick a heck of a time to throw his best game as a Dodger. Having just concluded his rehab from Tommy John Surgery performed in late April last year, McCarthy returned to the mound to blank the Colorado Rockies for five innings at Dodger Stadium. He struck out eight batters, gave up two hits and walked only one. Per Ken Gurnick and Thomas Harding at MLB.com:
"It was surprisingly normal," said McCarthy. "I wasn't really expecting it to feel like I'd just get in the swing of things, but it felt normal. I didn't feel too nervous. There wasn't anything going on that I wasn't expecting. Just settled in normally."Per Doug Padilla at ESPN:
“It was great; this was as good as I’ve seen him in years past,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “The fastball had late life; he threw the breaking ball when he needed to, mixed in a couple changeups. Eight punchouts in five innings; he just kind of continued what our starters have done this entire series. We’re really excited for him. He drove in a run too. Ryu, who has missed the last season and a half with shoulder surgery, could return as early as Thursday, and if not then, soon after next week's All-Star break.
Kershaw's herniated disk necessitated the Norris trade, as well as an epidural pain-killing injection. Educated guesses range from four to eight weeks on the sidelines for a disk that doesn't need surgery, and he's already been down for one week. Teammate Scott Van Slyke was out for two months with a similar injury.
"Everything that's happened in the three or four days since the epidural has been extremely positive," said Friedman. "That being said, I think we'll know more probably in the next week. You need to give it time past the epidural to get a sense of improvement, then we'll go from there.

“The DL sucks. There’s no getting around it, it’s awful,” he added seriously. “It’s worse coming to the field every day. You just feel like whether you do or not, you feel like you’re letting the team down by not pitching. It’s just the way it is and you just gotta kinda get through it.”

"He's around, he's taking swings," manager Dave Roberts said. "Some front toss, tee work, swinging the bat. He's jogging now. Hopefully here in the next week he'll get another scan, but to tolerance, he feels good."
