Holy moly!
Last time around SCP featured a giant collection from the estate of Dodgers Hall of Famer Don Drysdale. Now they bring along another collection from a Dodger great. Featured here are some of the memorabilia that once belonged to Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston.
Over the next few days I'll highlight several of my favorites. The items shown here all relate to his early years as a player and a young rookie manager in Brooklyn.
At the very top are three belt buckle awards given to Alston while he was a prospect (Auction Link). On the left is a 1939 South Atlantic League All-Star Game presentation award. At center is a 1938 Mid-Atlantic League Championship award. On the right is a 1945 Interstate League All-Star Game award.
BTW, in 1945 Walter Alston was a player-manager for the Trenton Spartans - a Brooklyn Class-B club. He had just joined the Dodgers franchise during the middle of the prior year and was quickly installed to fill that dual role.
The next season, 1946, Alston would become the player-manager of the Nashua Dodgers in New Hampshire. Joining him there would be future Dodgers legends Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella. As a memento of his time there he got his entire team to sign the above team photograph on the reverse (Auction Link).
After a successful stint managing at the Triple-A level for the Dodgers he was promoted to lead the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. Below is his game-worn cap from that year (Auction Link). As you can see it has been bronzed.
Lastly, below is his game used Brooklyn Dodgers road jersey and pants (Auction Link).
