Blog Kiosk: 8/22/2016 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

This past Saturday Fernando Valenzuela joined the LA Dodgers Foundation in Inglewood as part of a RBI Dodger Day event.  Hundreds of kids came out to enjoy an afternoon of Baseball, a carnival and gifts.   Per a Dodgers press release:
"This is our first year participating in the Dodgers RBI Program," said City of Inglewood Director of Parks, Recreation and Library Services Sabrina Barnes. "I am looking forward to a long and lasting relationship as we work together to uplift our youth and revive baseball in inner cities. Go Dodgers!"

This event will serve as the culmination to the inaugural Dodgers RBI season in Inglewood launched this summer for more than 300 players. Darby Park will be the home to the 45th and 46th Dodger Dreamfields. LADF will break ground later this year.

  • This Day in Dodger History:  In 1948 the Dodgers recorded a triple steal in the fifth inning of their game against the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field.  Jackie Robinson stole home, Gene Hermanski took third and Pee Wee Reese swiped second base.  In 1965 was the infamous game between the Dodgers and Giants; where Juan Marichal attacks Johnny Roseboro with his bat.  In 2000 Eric Karros becomes the first Dodger in franchise history to hit two home runs in one inning.  It was against the Expos.
  • Happy Birthday: Ned Hanlon, Randy Wolf and Jeff Weaver!
  • Via Cody Pace at MLB.com; "Kershaw feels '100 percent' after bullpen session: Lefty ace throws 20-25 pitches, set for 40-45 on Tuesday in LA."
"I thought it was successful," Roberts said. "With my own eyes, I thought the intensity was there and very productive. I think it was somewhere between 20 and 25 pitches, probably 22-ish. I think Clayton came out pretty positive."
"We were just breaking 'em every day -- not just during games, but during travel," said Dodgers equipment manager Mitch Poole, who would replace the broken logos with new ones. "I could barely keep up with it. We had about 160 of the logos and now I'm down to six."

So now Poole is switching gears. He has ordered a fresh batch of 3-D logos, but the new set is made of Santoprene, a rubber-like polymer that's flexible and therefore shouldn't crack. Poole expects to receive a batch of the new logos in time for Friday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. He'll begin swapping in the new logos as the old ones break.
  • Blowout Buzz takes a closer look at the available Justin Turner Baseball cards.  Check that out here.  Surprisingly, there aren't an awful lot out there.
There’s one problem, though. When it comes to cardboard, he’s a bit of a rare breed — and that’s translated into some cash for some collectors who have found and sold.

Turner appears on less than 300 different baseball cards and on just three certified autographs. He’s got a lone memorabilia card and just four Rookie Cards. That’s it.
“My first catching coach was with the Dodgers – Johnny Roseboro. Then there was Kevin Kennedy and Joe Ferguson. They helped me to progress quickly because they has so much experience.” Piazza even got help from Dodgers legend Roy Campanella.

“I enjoyed coming up with the Dodgers. I had an amazing career there. I got to know Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and all of the Dodger Hall of Famers and greats who stopped by and offered advice,” the 47-year-old Piazza points out.
