Blog Kiosk: 11/16/2016 - Dodgers Links - Congrats, Skip! Dave Roberts is Manager of the Year!

Check out this fantastic panoramic photograph of the 1916 Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers) that is currently available at Hunt Auctions (link here).  It features the entire club, with exception of the kid with the bullhorn on the far right, in those fantastic checkered Brooklyn uniforms.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1966 Sandy Koufax missed out on winning his second MVP award by ten votes to Pirates outfielder Roberto Clemente.  As you know, this would be Koufax's last major league season.
  • Happy Birthday, Julio Lugo!
  • As you surely know, rookie manager Dave Roberts was named the NL "Manager of the Year".  Per a press release from the Dodgers:

“I’d like to thank the BBWAA for this honor,” said Roberts. “I am humbled by this award. I’d like to congratulate Joe Maddon and Dusty Baker, who are not only great managers, but connect with their players in a way that I deeply respect. I share this award with the players, coaches and front office, who made me look good on a daily basis. Finally, I’d like to thank my family who has been with me every step of the way.”

“Congratulations to Dave Roberts on becoming just the second Dodger to win the Manager of the Year,” said Dodger President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman. “Doc has a great baseball mind, is a great communicator, possesses endless energy and is relentlessly optimistic.  He has been remarkably consistent since the first day of spring training which is extremely difficult to do in the roller-coaster ride that is a Major League season.  He was able to maintain that through our low points as well as our high points.  Congratulations to Dave and his amazing family on an incredibly, special accomplishment.”

  • Just more rumors to make you needlessly anxious.  Jon Heyman at FanRag Sports notes:
The Dodgers would be interested in Frazier (in a trade with the White Sox) as a fallback should they not sign their own star free-agent third baseman Justin Turner, whom they prefer.
Even here, Turner looks to provide good value on an expected contract. That could make him a bargain this winter, but Turner’s unusual career and lower amount of playing time does add some risk. Players don’t play as well into their 30s, and whoever ends up with Turner is going to end up with some down seasons. If he can avoid a big dropoff, he will be a steal for whichever team that signs him, but there’s some precedent for a scenario in which his production falls well short of the money he’d receive from a potential contract.
“Following the great season the Chicago Cubs just had, counterfeiters may see this time as a good opportunity to take advantage of the fans’ excitement and distribute questionable items to the public,” Special Agent Brian Brusokas said in a statement.

“These items can include everything from autographs to game-used items such as jerseys, bats, balls and caps. We can also see a flood of unlicensed T-shirts and other items commemorating this special year,” said Brusokas, a member of the FBI’s Art Crimes team that investigates fraud regarding collectibles.
  • Baseball historians, this is for you.  John Thorn shares his keynote speech to the 19th Century Baseball Interdisciplinary Symposium and it's filled with a bunch of great information.  Check it out here.
The origin of ball play by young men in enduring, structured clubs, bound by a constitution and bylaws — as opposed to informal gatherings of children or menfolk — is first and foremost a Philadelphia story.
  • Apparently, Joc Pederson is looking for a winter job.  Via a tweet from Linsey Thiry, he visited the Rams practice yesterday and spent some time catching footballs.
