Welcome to the Blue, Josh Fields!

The Dodgers have added another reliever to their stable, and barring any injuries is likely to be sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City.  In other words, this recent trade is all about depth.  The Dodgers have traded 18-year old Cuban first baseman Yordan Alvarez (just signed out of Las Tunas, Cuba in June) to the Astros for right-handed reliever Josh Fields.  Per Dodgers press release:

Fields, 30, went 1-0 with one save and a 1.65 ERA in 23 relief appearances for the Astros’ Triple-A Fresno this season, limiting opponents to a .192 batting average with a 0.65 WHIP. He also made 15 appearances for the Astros this year, posting a 6.89 ERA (12 ER/15.2 IP), and went 9-10 with nine saves and a 4.53 ERA in 164 big-league games with Houston in four seasons from 2013-16, averaging better than a strikeout per inning in the Majors with 197 Ks in 159.0 innings. He was originally selected by the Mariners in the first round (20th overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia.

Welcome to the Blue, Jesse Chavez!

The Dodgers are very busy today.

We have just gotten word of another Dodgers trade and this time they get a right-handed reliever to join the bullpen.  Per tweets from Ken Rosenthal and Joel Sherman, Southern California native Jesse Chavez is now be a Dodger.  Dodgers starting pitcher Mike Bolsinger will go to the Blue Jays.  Per Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider:

Chavez, who turns 33 on August 21, has a 1.28 WHIP and 4.57 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings this year for Toronto. The previous two seasons, he pitched mostly as a starter for Oakland, with a 3.83 ERA from 2014-15.

Welcome to the Blue, Rich Hill!

Now that you've had time to welcome in outfielder Josh Reddick to the Dodgers, I thought I would officially introduce starting pitcher Rich Hill.  As you surely know by now, the Dodgers also attained the services of left-handed starter Rich Hill.  Per Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider:

Hill has had an unusual career. At age 36, in his 12th Major League season, he has only 576 big-league innings to his name. He actually is on the disabled list right now, dating back to July 20, because of a blister issue. He also missed pitching in June because of a left groin strain.

However, when healthy in 2016, he has dominated, throwing 76 innings in 14 starts with a 2.25 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Today is trade deadline day, and naturally the Dodgers are at the forefront of every rumor.  Typically, nothing comes about, and I expected that this evening would pass without anything significant coming to Los Angeles.

Boy... Was I wrong.

The Dodgers have made the first big move of the day by acquiring an veteran outfielder and starting pitcher.  Today, the Dodgers have acquired Josh Reddick and Rich Hill in exchange for three minor leaguers.  Per a report by Doug Padilla at ESPN, pitchers Grant Holmes, Jharel Cotton and Frankie Montas are going to the A's.
