With Spring around the corner I can't help but be excited when I see a vintage spring training photograph like the one above. (eBay Auction Link) Featured are five Dodger pitchers showing off for the camera while training at Dodgertown, dated February 25, 1953. It was taken by noted International News and soon-to-be Sports Illustrated photographer Herb Scharfman. Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Posing prettily here at the Brooklyn Dodgers Vero Beach camp are the five top flingers of the Dodgers/ In Front: Russ Meyer, latest acquisition; and Carl Erskine (right). Rear: (from left) Joe Black, Billy Loes and Preacher Roe.Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 2011 the Dodgers signed veteran free agent outfielder Gabe Kapler as a non-roster invitee. Unfortunately, he didn't make the team and would subsequently be released at the end of March. As you know, he would soon retire and make his mark in the Baseball front office.
- Happy Birthday, Eddie Moore, Len Koenecke, Billy Grabarkewitz, Brian Falkenborg & Mike Lieberthal!

- I am now going to have to get this card just so I can have him sign it. Per Ric Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily; "New Address for WW2 Vet on 2016 Topps Update First Pitch Card." Apparently, the 92-year old veteran loves signing them, but he moved. So, check the link above for his new address.
- Per Bill Plaschke at the LA Times; "Dodgers mystery solved: Charlie Culberson's ball at home with Navy veteran."
I was like, ‘Man, this ball is coming right at me!’ ’’
After spending 18 months dodging danger in Iraq and Afghanistan, retired Naval Petty Officer Alan Hampson was finally standing underneath a good kind of trouble.
I love that the ball landed in the hands of a true blue Dodger fan.
- I regret not being able to go to this game. Via Ian Smith at Rink Royalty; "Los Angeles Kings Commend Willie O’Ree on MLK Day." As you may know, Willie O’Ree, in 1958, became the first black player in NHL history when he got on the ice for the Boston Bruins. BTW, O'Ree played for both the Los Angeles Blades and San Diego Gulls of the WHL in the 60's.

- This is an awfully nice gesture. Per Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs on twitter:
