Blog Kiosk: 2/1/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Don Newcombe was a beast in 1955.  He finished the Dodgers only championship season in Brooklyn by going 20-5 with 17 complete games, 143 strike outs and a league leading 1.113 WHIP.  This, of course, would just be a precursor to what would happen the following year.  In 1956 Newcombe would take home both the Cy Young and MVP awards -- a first in Baseball.  Featured above is a 1955 AP wirephoto, dated Jully 11th, that shows Don's complete windup (auction link).  Per the descriptor:
Batter's Eye View of Big Don Newcombe -- Don Newcombe, big Brooklyn righthander and a member of the National League All-Star team, throws a fast one past a sequence camera in Polo Grounds yesterday before Dodgers-Giants game.  Newcombe has 14 and 1 record on the mound this year.
Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1919 the Dodgers traded Jake Daubert to the Reds for outfielder Tommy Griffith.  In 1959 ever-popular Brooklyn Dodgers outfilder Zach Wheat is unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.  In 1976 East Lansing police arrest Dodgers reliever Mike Marshall for disobeying the orders set by the Michigan State University police prohibiting him from taking batting practice. MSU feared he would hit balls too far and injure students on an adjacent tennis court. Marshall protests that it is against his rights as an MSU instructor and files a lawsuit against the school.
  • Happy Birthday, Chuck Churn, Elian Herrera, Justin Sellers & Brett Anderson!
  • Via Doug Padilla at ESPN; "Q&A: Logan Forsythe buys 65-acre farm, gets dealt to L.A. ... on same day."
Q: How did you hear about the trade to the Dodgers?
LF: My wife and I had just closed on a farm in Tennessee. I had just left the property, and I got a call from the [Rays'] front office, and I could just tell that it was news that they didn’t want to tell me. I said, "You’re not trading me, are you?" And they said, "Yeah, we are." I was like, "OK, where are am I going?" And that’s how I found out.

Justin Turner interrupts …
JT: Have you picked a spot in the locker room yet because I’m looking for a new neighbor.

LF: Dude, I’m your guy.
On expanding the knowledge base: “One of the best parts of working here is that there’s a lot of freedom to explore things that are maybe not traditional. The resources are there. There are some unbelievably intelligent people working in R&D and baseball ops. We’re building great relationships, and trying to work together, because we’re all trying to get at the same end game.
"This is the city where I was raised, where I was born, and I try to come here every time I can to prepare myself," Urias, 20, said in Spanish. "Everybody loves me here, they support me a lot. It's nice when you come here after a long season and see the way they welcome you, it's incredible."

Urias grew up around five minutes from the baseball academy -- which partnered with Major League Baseball last summer -- off of a couple of dirt roads in the small town of La Higuerita. He still lives there with his parents. Yes, he's become a local hero, but he's the same guy who signed with the Dodgers back in 2012. He drives a new but not flashy SUV and he wears almost no new jewelry. The pitcher has added on to his parents' house, extending the back patio, but mostly to make it the perfect spot to grill carne asada and host family birthday parties.
  • JP Howell is moving on to the American League, Via a tweet by Buster Olney, he has signed one-year deal with the Blue Jays:

  • Via Eric Stephen at True Blue LA; "Dodgers OF Mitchell Hansen out 6-8 weeks after elbow surgery."
  • Here's a great post by Baseball's official historian, John Thorn.  It's all about a "Baseball Girl in Japan", and her perilous journey from Philadelphia to Japan and back again to play in an exhibition tour. (Link Here)
  • Today is the official release date of Topps flagship Baseball card set, and as noted Baseball card collector Keith Olbermann is wont to do he opened up his first box yesterday.  He shared on twitter the very first card in the pack, and it's a Dodger -- Andre Ethier!:
