Blog Kiosk: 2/7/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Who could forget that weekend last season when several thousand Dodger fans arrived at Yankee Stadium to overtake a demonstrably demure New York fanbase.  Angelenos had come to scream, holler and chant for the men in Blue.  Then they made their presence known to a shocked Baseball public by performing a Dodgers "roll call" during the game -- to the consternation of Yankees' bleacher-creatures.

Of course, this act of invasion is nothing new to Dodger fans.  As proof check out the above ACME telephoto press pic of a group of boisterous Brooklyn fans invading Philadelphia's Shibe Park on the last day of the 1949 season.  (eBay Auction Link)

The Dodgers were sitting one game above the Cards for the pennant, and needed a victory to lock it up.  Naturally, their legions of fans came to support their team.  The Dodgers wouldn't make it easy, though.  They had to win the game in the tenth inning to capture the 1949 pennant.

  • This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1958 the Dodgers officially became the Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc.  In 2006 the Dodgers signed Japanese pitcher Takashi Saito to a free agent contract.

  • FYI, Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis will be on Reddit doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) this coming Wednesday, February 8th, starting at 1:30 PM.  Go here for the announcement.
  • Via Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider; "George Lombard’s high on Dodger outfield’s ability to go get it."
“Me coming in for the first time, not knowing the guys on the team, you see Joc (Pederson) and see his ball skills on balls in the air — they are outstanding,” Lombard said. “He’s a guy who’s not a burner, but he has a unique ability to get the ball when it’s in the air.“
For the most part, Calhoun swings for power. He has a high-timing leg kick that also works to shift his strong lower half into contact. His bat plane is a slight uppercut that generates loft and should give him plus power potential for a second baseman, but also enough power to eventually shift to left field if need be. He doesn’t have much physical development left, so all-fields power is not likely in the offering down the road.

(Carlitos) Urias, 14, is one of 45 prospects in the inaugural class of Major League Baseball's new academy in the Tres Rios sector of the city. Centered on the grounds of La Academia y el Museo Interactivo del Beisbol de Sinaloa, MLB's academy began operating in early January for players ages 13-17 as part of a partnership with the Sinaloan state government.

"This is a great opportunity for players like me," Urias said in Spanish. "It's very unique, the only one in the country, and we are happy to be here. We just have to keep working hard."
