Blog Kiosk: 2/8/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Here is an up-close look at the famous right field wall at Ebbets Field.  The AP wirephoto is dated to August 22, 1955 and features Dodger outfielder Carl Furillo (eBay Auction Link).  Per the caption:
Outfielder Carl Furillo demonstrates in Brooklyn Dodgers workout today why he is master of the right field wall in Ebbets Field.  In this sequence camera series Carl reaches up for ball, starts to turn in mid-air and is prepared to throw as he comes down.  In the last picture the ball is enroute to second base to cut down any ambitious hitter who wants to stretch a single.
Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1916 National League owners voted down a proposal by Dodgers owner Charles Ebbets that would impose a limit of 2,000 seat that club can sell for 25 cents.  In 1933 the Dodgers traded their soon-to-be Hall of Fame pitcher Dazzy Vance to the Cardinals for a couple of scrubs.  In 1982 the Dodgers traded longtime second baseman Davey Lopes to the A's for a minor leaguer.  This trade broke up the longest-playing infield in major league history.  In 1995 the Dodgers signed Japanese free agent pitcher Hideo Nomo.
  • Happy Birthday, Bruce Caldwell, Bert Haas, Charlie Householder & Joe Black!
  • Just a reminder, Dodger broadcaster Joe Davis will be on Reddit this afternoon for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session at r/DodgersHere is the official announcement.

  • Check this out.  There has apparently been an magazine story about Sergio Romo in Proceso magazine of Mexico City, and it details his experience with discrimination on both sides of the border.  Check out an English translation here, at Baseball in Mexico.
  • Baseball Prospectus just released their PECOTA projections, and it predicts that the Dodgers will 98 games this season.  In fact, the Dodgers are projected to be the best team in the Majors. Go here to check it out.
  • Following the above PECOTA projection, Bradford Doolittle at ESPN shares his own prediction on; "The state of baseball's best teams."  On the Dodgers:
My spreadsheet loves the Dodgers' run prevention outlook. My preliminary forecast has them allowing 47 fewer runs than the Cubs, the second-stingiest team entering spring training. Offensive forecasts tend to be a lot more stable in these kinds of exercises than defense-and-pitching forecasts. But that's an impressive baseline from which to start.
Brock Stewart is another good reason. Fairly quietly, Stewart surged forward in 2016, by pulling off two very fundamental tasks: throwing a bunch of strikes, and missing a bunch of bats.
  • Kenta Maeda threw his first bullpen session of 2017, per an Instagram post:
According to Merriam-Webster, the concept of the five-hole likely originated with Hall of Famer and goaltending innovator Jacques Plante, who numbered the five areas of the net that goalies need to protect. Obviously, no one ever refers to the first four holes by their number — but the five-hole stuck.
