- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1982 Fernando Valenzuela ends his three week holdout and reports to Vero Beach for spring camp. He earned just $42,500 in 1981, requested a raise to $1 million, then had his Dodger contract unilaterally renewed for a reported $350,000. In 2006 the U.S. Postal Service unveils the "Baseball Sluggers" postage stamps that includes Mickey Mantle, Mel Ott, Hank Greenberg and Roy Campanella. See it on the right.

“It feels like its Groundhogs Day all over again,” the Dodgers’ veteran outfielder said. “I’ve been stuck in spring training for 18 months now. That kind of hit me when I was sitting at home yesterday.”
- BTW, Clayton Kershaw was sharp in his spring outing yesterday. He threw 71 pitches during six scoreless innings, giving up only two hits, one walk and striking out eleven. Per T.R. Sullivan and Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"Better, definitely," Kershaw said. "Fastball command wasn't quite as good as I need it for the season, I thought. I fell behind a lot of guys, just long at-bats that gets your pitch count up there and makes it hard to go seven or eight innings."
- Per an AP story the US DOJ has settled the collusion case related to SportsNet LA, and carrying the channel is not part of the deal: "Justice Department settles suit over Dodgers broadcasts."
The deal also requires the companies to monitor certain communications their programming executives have with their rivals, and to implement antitrust training and compliance programs.
"When competitors email, text, or otherwise share confidential and strategically sensitive information with each other to avoid competing, consumers lose," Acting Assistant Attorney General Brent Snyder of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division said in a statement.

- Steve Roush at the Highland County Press (Ohio) shares an interview with former Brooklyn Dodger Clyde King: "Boys of summers past: The King of Diamonds, Part II."
Mr. Rickey asked King to come to his office. He wanted to make sure the would-be rookie could handle the pressure of the big leagues.
“He asked me if I wanted to play professional ball,” King said. “I told him I didn’t think I was good enough, but he told me he thought I was. He asked me to sign a contract and he asked what kind of bonus I wanted. I had no idea, I just turned 20, never been out of the state (of North Carolina) before, never seen a 50 dollar bill, so I told him $5,000. I thought he was going to say, ‘Son, get on the train and go back to Goldsboro.’ He told his secretary, ‘Bring in a check for $5,000.’”
