Beloved comedian and great friend of the Dodgers, Don Rickles, passed away yesterday at the age of 90. In his honor I made the above two fantasy Baseball cards of him. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I’ve lost and the world has lost a very dear friend,” Lasorda said in a statement. “I remember the many times he came into our locker room and had our players in stitches before a big game.”You can watch Don Rickles insult the Dodgers in a great bit from a 1986 television show called "Rickles... On the Loose" here. Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1969 Dodger reliever Bill Singer is the first major leaguer to officially be credited with a new fangled stat called the save. It was on Opening Day in Cincinnati, and Singer pitched three scoreless innings to maintain a 3-2 victory over the Reds. In 1977, on Opening Day, Don Sutton was directed to throw a gopher ball on the first pitch of the game to the Giants lead-off hitter Gary Thomasson. That ball would then be given to the home plate umpire to be sent to Cooperstown. As you might expect, the Giant batter instead hit the pitch for a home run. He claims he had no idea about the plan (yhea, right!).
"They told him that the first ball he threw would be sent to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown," Lasorda said. "Well, the first ball he threw was hit by Gary Thomasson halfway up the bleachers. I said to him, They wanted to send the ball to Cooperstown; they didn't want someone to hit it there."
This is the same game Frank Sinatra kept his promise to Tommy Lasorda by performing the national anthem at Dodger Stadium. In 1979 the Dodgers traded pitcher Rick Rhoden to the Pirates for pitcher Jerry Reuss.
- Happy Birthday, Bobby Mitchell, Brett Tomko, Ronnie Belliard & Adrian Beltre!
- Yasiel Puig had quite a day yesterday. He whacked two homers to lead the Dodgers in a 10-2 victory over the Padres. Per AJ Cassavell and Steve Dilbeck at MLB.com:
"Weave left a couple pitches up to Puig, and he made him pay for it," said Padres manager Andy Green. "I thought Weave battled well today, pitched out of a trouble a number of times. We got to a portion of our bullpen that had trouble commanding the ball. When you walk six or seven guys in a two-inning stretch, it's just not going to go well for you."
BTW, you can check out a bunch of great pics form the game by Jon SooHoo and Jill Weisleder here.
- Check out the collection of this Dodger-super-collector. Per Robert Dalton at GoUpstate.com; "Former SHS principal Joe Clarke’s collection a home run."
When he was 10 years old, Joe Clarke took an oath.
He pledged, in writing, his loyalty to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now, 61 years later, Clarke still bleeds Dodger blue.
- I'm loving this guy more and more. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Digest; "Romo gives Roberts a first."
“Sergio’s great,” Roberts said. “He thanked me for the inning after he came out, which was very generous of him. He’s quirky, funny, but he’s a tough competitor and I know he couldn’t be happier to be a Dodger. To get his first inning under his belt at home, I know he was thrilled.”
- I eagerly await his debut at Dodger Stadium. Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA; "Cody Bellinger reaches base 4 times in 2017 debut."
- Via Jacob Unruh at News OK; "Outfielder Trayce Thompson works to regain footing in new setting."
“I feel totally normal,” Thompson said. “I'm ready to play, and I'm very hungry. I'm just ready to get out there. I know everyone's kind of anxious for Thursday. It's just another baseball season. Obviously, I missed some time last year, but physically I feel normal and I'm happy to be back.”
- William Regenthal at Foul Bunt shares a recent TTM autograph of former Brooklyn Dodger Bobby Morgan.
- Cat Loves the Dodgers shares a bunch of great pics from Game #2. Go here to check them out.
- This is rough. Would you take the Dodger backup starters over the Padres current starting rotation? Christopher Crawford at Vice Sports wonders this and writes; "Who You Got? The Padres 1-5 Starters or the Dodgers 6-10 Starters?"
- I am a supporter of this. Per Craig Calcaterra at NBC Sports; "There’s a chance major leaguers could play in the 2020 Olympics."
