Last nights thrilling extra inning affair earned another 2017 Topps Now card for Dodger fans, and for once it doesn't highlight the heroics of Cody Bellinger. Instead, it allows us to bask in the wonder of Clayton Kershaw phenomenal start against the Cardinals and Logan Forsythe's seemingly improbable hit after flailing miserably all night long. (Topps Now link here) As you know, collectors and fans have until tomorrow afternoon to place an order for this card. Per Ken Gurnick and Jenifer Langosch at MLB.com:
"Once it happens, after that fourth one (strike out), I was like, 'OK, well something needs to change,'" said Forsythe. "But that was even the case after the first one. I was like, 'All right, make an adjustment.' Sometimes it takes a little bit or a couple more at bats to find it. Luckily, I was able to get the barrel and make a play."As for Kershaw, his nine inning effort dropped his career WHIP to under 1. Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA:
“The curve ball was as good as it’s been all year. The slider I felt was very sharp,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Everything was working tonight. He deserved a chance to finish that game.”Per the writing on the reverse of the Topps Now card:
By allowing just the three baserunners on Tuesday, Kershaw also moved into very rare territory, lowering his career WHIP below one. He has 1,346 hits allowed and 485 walks in 1,831⅔ innings, good for a WHIP of 0.99964.
“I’m not worried about the career stuff,” Kershaw said. “Eventually, you’ll get to look back on it all. Hopefully, I’m right in the middle of all that stuff.”
Logan Forsythe had strikeouts in his first four at-bats, but became a hero when he doubled home Kike Hernandez with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Dodgers a walk-off win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The game was highlighted by a classic pitchers' duel between clayton Kershaw and Lance Lynn. Kershaw was incredible with 10 strikeouts and came close to his 16th career shutout, an opportunity that extinguished with one out in the ninth.UPDATE: The print run for this card is 224 cards.
