Blog Kiosk: 5/19/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

It was nice to see several former Dodgers back in town. AJ Ellis, Dee Gordon former manager Don Mattingly. Photos above all via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2017. Go here to check out more pics by Jon from yesterdays game.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1988 Tim Leary threw his second shutout of the season against the Montreal Expos.  He had been winless in his past five starts. Leary would go on to be an important cog in the World Series championship team. He would be the #2 man in the rotation - going 17-11 with an 2.91 ERA, nine complete games and six shutouts. In 2015 the Dodgers officially signed Cuban defector Héctor Olivera to a six year/$62.5 million contract (including a $28 million signing bonus). He would then be traded a couple of months later to the Braves in a three team trade that netted the Dodgers Alex Wood and a bunch of other players not worth mentioning.
  • Happy Birthday, Dutch Schliebner, Jim Hickman, Earl Naylor & Bill Antonello!
  • Video: Hear from Kenley Jansen after recording a four-out save and an immaculate 9th inning in the Dodgers 7-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday night.  (video link)
  • Video: Dave Roberts comments on the potential injury to Justin Turner, and Hyun-Jin Ryu’s performance in the Dodgers 7-2 win over the Marlins on Thursday night..  (video link)
  • ICYMI: Kenley Jansen had a wonderful ninth inning last night. He threw his first Immaculate Inning - three strike outs on nine pitchings in one inning - to get the save. Per Eric Stepehen at True Blue LA:
“I’ve been pitching for seven or eight years, and I had no idea what that was,” Jansen said. “That was awesome. It’s a blessing.”

  • Per Bill Plunkett at the OC Register; "Yasiel Puig has settled into familiar pattern at the plate."
“A lot of it has been pitch selection throughout last year … and his whole career,” Roberts acknowledged. “But I think right now it’s something mechanical. I see he’s getting good pitches to hit, but he’s really not squaring things up lately. Mechanically, he’s a little under the baseball as far as when he’s hitting fly balls to right field. But he’s getting strikes. He’s just not putting the swings on them he needs to.
Last night he sure did put the right swing into it. You can watch his monster home run here.
“Just talking to the training staff, the strength was still there, which is positive” Roberts said of Turner’s hamstring. “To my eyes it didn’t look good coming around third base.

“But I heard the strength was OK, so we’re going to hold out hope (Turner avoids the disabled list).”

Roberts added the issue is closer to Turner’s knee, as opposed to “the belly of the hamstring.”
  • This was a very nice moment, and I admit I do miss the old guy. Last night the Dodgers paid homage to AJ Ellis when he returned to Dodger Stadium as an Marlin with a tribute video. Watch it below:
