Blog Kiosk: 5/26/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Could this be a regular thing?

Last Night the Dodgers tried something a little different. Kenta Meda started the contest by giving up three runs in the first inning, but quickly settled down to finish the night with only three runs scored on seven hits, two walks and four strike outs in five innings. Then Hyun-Jin Ryu, in long-relief for the first time, completed the game by throwing a four inning save. He allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out two to earn the first save of his major league career. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"It worked tonight, and I'd like to think the more he does it, the more he can kind of get comfortable with the role," Roberts said, praising Ryu's unselfishness for accepting the assignment. "Again, this is not something that we plan on being permanent. It's just to make sure we build his pitch count up and get him consistent innings and tonight it was a win for all of us."

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1957 the Dodger got back Tommy Lasorda. After having been drafted by Brooklyn in 1948 he bounced around from the Phillies to the Browns to the A's and then to the Yankees before returning home. He would remain with the franchise for the remainder of his Baseball career. In 1970 the Dodgers knocked out 20 hit against the hated Giants at Candlestick Park during their 19-3 victory. This is the all-time highest runs scored total against our rival. In 1971 Maury Wills recorded his 2,000th career hit at Dodger Stadium against Gaylord Perry and the Giants. It was a run-scoring single in the fifth inning. Unfortunately, the Dodgers lost the game, 6-4.

  • Congrats! Per the Baseball Hall of Fame; "Rachel Robinson Named Buck O’Neil Award Winner."
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Board of Directors has selected Rachel Robinson as the 2017 recipient of the John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award. Robinson becomes the fourth winner of the Buck O’Neil Award, which was established in 2007 to honor an individual whose efforts broadened the game’s appeal and whose character, integrity and dignity is comparable to the late O’Neil, who passed away in 2006 after eight decades of contributions to the game. O’Neil was honored as the first recipient of the Award in 2008. Long-time executive Roland Hemond was honored with the second Buck O’Neil Award in 2011, followed by Joe Garagiola in 2014.
  • I really love this bit from Big League Stew. Via Mike Oz; "Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with A.J. Ellis."
  • Via Travis Sawchik at FanGraphs; "The Dodgers Basically Have a Six-Man Rotation."
While 25-man rosters limit creativity, the new 10-day DL has allowed teams to experiment, and the Dodgers — as was forecast before the season by many — have best taken advantage of the truncated disabled list. The Dodgers entered the season with the greatest number of quality rotation options in the game, and that depth came with plenty of talented but risky options like Rich Hill, Scott Kazmir, and Brandon McCarthy.
  • Dodger prospect Wilmer Font is highlighted in todays Fringe Five. Per Carson Cistulli at FanGraphs; "The Fringe Five: Baseball’s Most Compelling Fringe Prospects."
As of Thursday night, Font continued to possess the highest strikeout rate among 514 qualified pitchers in the minors.
