The Dodgers love the long ball.

Joc Pederson's three-run sixth inning home run last night marked the teams 50th homer during the month of June -- setting a new franchise mark. Per Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"The at-bats collectively in June, very good, obviously," manager Dave Roberts said. "The results, obviously very good. But I think that the focus, the keeping the line moving, winning pitches, I think that resulted in the long ball. It is incredible, and you look at the month and what we did offensively and that's something that we know potentially that this lineup can do."

Hi Lambchop! -- Vintage Signed Dodgers Get Well Card

This is the kind of thing that would surely cheer up any Dodger fan.

Heck, after last nights debacle in the ninth inning we all need a little cheering up.

Featured here is a vintage, circa 1950's, get well greeting card that includes signatures of several well known Brooklyn Dodger players. (auction link) It is certified to have real autographs of Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella on the inside, but the rest of them are considered clubhouse signatures. In other words, they were signed by the ever-popular and longtime Dodgers batboy, Charlie "The Brow" DiGiovanna -- which is pretty cool in itself.

It just closed and sold for $1,041.25.

You gotta admit, last nights game was incredible. Sure, the Dodgers ended up on the short end of the stick, but that's okay. Next time we'll be the folks that are laughing. Per Maria Guardado and Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"Speed kills. That's the game of a baseball, and that's what happened tonight." -- Revere
"We haven't lost games like that. Unfortunately, things like that are going to happen. The kid, Meyer, competed. Really couldn't put anything together. That's a tough way to lose." -- Roberts
I would say that that was a fun way to lose. Last night was just a case of "Baseball being Baseball". BTW, Pantone 294 once again made their presence known in another stadium. This time they took over Angels Stadium, as evidenced by the photo on the right by Jon SooHoo.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1990 Fernando Valenzuela no-hit the Cardinals, 6-0, at Dodger Stadium.  With 119 pitches he struck out seven and walked three.  Also, on this same night, former Dodgers starter Dave Stewart threw a no-hitter against the Blue Jays; thereby marking the first time in modern Baseball history that two no-hitters were thrown on the same day.  Via Tommy Lasorda, at the time
"And it couldn't have happened to a tougher, more competitive guy," Lasorda said. "You look at Fernando and he has done everything in his career except a no-hitter. And now . . . this."

After recently being sent to the bullpen, Kenta Maeda was masterful in his spot start last night. He went seven strong innings, yielded just four hits, recorded six strike outs and gave up zero walks for his sixth victory of the season. Per Ken Gurnick and Kaelen Jones at MLB.com:
"The last few outings, he's been aggressive and filling the strike zone," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Maeda. "With his mix, putting hitters on the defensive, there just weren't many good swings they got off him."
Maeda is responding positively to the pressure that comes with being on the Dodgers pitching staff. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“There’s a sense of urgency overall,” Maeda said through an interpreter. “I didn’t start the year on a good note. Regardless if I’m in the bullpen or starting, there’s a sense of urgency I feel to produce results.”

In 1969 the Dodgers and Don Drysdale shut down the Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium by the lopsided score of 19-0. They break a LA Dodgers all-time record for runs scored in a game. In 2008 the Dodgers were no-hit by the Angels (Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo), but still won the game, 1-0. The lone run was scored in the fifth inning when a couple of errors and a sacrifice fly by Blake DeWitt scores the eventual winning run.

I guess we can't expect to win them all, but it would've been nice to take the first game of the Freeway Series against the Angels. Per Ken Gurnick and Kaelen Jones at MLB.com:
"That's the great thing about this game, that's why we play," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the flipped script. "Tip your hat to Nolasco, he threw a great baseball game. He's a veteran pitcher who had a really good night."
It figures that a former Dodger would break our ten-game winning streak.

Welcome to the Dodgers, Mike Freeman!

Nearly a month after being picked up by the Dodgers on the waiver wire from Seattle, versatile infielder/outfielder Mike Freeman was recalled to Los Angeles to fill a void created when outfielder Franklin Gutierrez was placed on the 10-day disabled list with an episode of ankylosis spondylitis. Mike Freeman will wear #37 for the Dodgers.

As you know, he came into yesterdays game as a pinch-hitter for reliever Luis Avilan in the fourth inning, and subsequently grounded out to short during the eight pitch at-bat.

2017 Topps Now -- #291 -- Bellinger's 24 Homers Most Since 1933

Cody Bellinger is not human. He's some sort of bat-wielding cyborg with a swing a smooth as silk and strength that you only hear about when speaking of the gods. Cody is like a mythical beast we all wish for, but never expect to see. He's become a game-changer, and if not for his sudden emergence we would likely not be anywhere near the top of the standings like we are today.

As you know, Cody Bellinger walloped two more home runs yesterday afternoon to reach a league high 24, and for his efforts he was awarded his 11th 2017 Topps Now card of the season. The card celebrates the most home runs in the 1st half of the season by an rookie since 1933. Go here to check it out and order. BTW, Cody was also named the National League Player of the Week this morning. Per a Dodger press release:

That game was unreal. Not only did the Dodgers capture their 10th win in a row, but they did it in the most unusual way. Trailing by five runs in the third inning they stormed back to win, 12-6, with the help of the home run ball (including two by Bellinger) and four wild pitches by the Rockies most consistent middle reliever. In fact, those wild throws resulted in five runs. Per Thomas Harding and Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"Their guys were on the ropes," Roberts said. "We didn't even give them any extra outs on the bases. We kept grinding and made those guys continue to make pitches. You look at what we did from the first game of the series, what we're doing to pitching staffs, there's a relentless kind of approach to what we're doing."
And to add insult to injury Kenley Jansen hit a double to drive in the first RBI of his career before recording his 17th save of the season. Per Matthew Mesa at Dodger Insider:
“It was a crazy game,” Kenley Jansen said. “I’ve never seen this before.”

This series against the Mets was ridiculous. The Dodgers set a new franchise record when they collectively hit 15 homers during the four-game set. The last of which scored the game winning run to help the Dodgers sweep the Mets. It was hit by Joc Pederson on the very first pitch of the seventh inning. I think it's safe to say, after a crushing collision in the outfield a month ago, that he is on the mend. Per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider:
“I think he’s getting there, and the one gauge for me is seeing his plate discipline,” said Dodger manager Dave Roberts. “And over the last 10 games he’s not offering at everything moving forward. So when balls are out of the strike zone he’s doing a good job taking. And he’s getting on base at an incredible rate right now. The next piece is when he gets balls in the strike zone to do what he did tonight.”

Vintage Jackie Robinson Photos at RMY Auction

Featured here are a couple fantastic vintage photos I came across at a recent RMY Auction that I wanted to pass long. As you can see, they both highlight Jackie Robinson. Above is the multi-faceted athlete on the hardwood floor. (auction link)

The auction house had speculated that it is from 1950 and is related to the filming of the biopic "The Jackie Robinson Story." It sold for a lofty $943.05. A princely sum, no doubt.

The below photo is just as fantastic -- even though it tells a rather sad story if your a Dodger fan. (auction link) It sold for a far more reasonable $78.77.

The Dodgers have now won six games in a row and sit atop of the National League West. Their lead is just half a game over the Rockies, but it's nice that all of their efforts are bearing fruit. And it's doubly nice that Yasiel Puig is beginning to contribute once again. He launched a massive home run last night that effectively put the lights out in the Mets clubhouse. It was so big Yasiel could do nothing but admire his masterpiece.  Of course, the whining masses had to complain. Per ESPN:
"I don't think he knows what having respect for the game is," Flores (Mets first baseman) said. "We're playing horrible right now. We don't need his [behavior]. He disrespected us."
To which Puig responded:
"If that's the way he feels, it might be a result of them not playing so well," Puig said.
Doh!

That was a nice simple little burn -- use Flores' own word to show how stupid this all is.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1936 Reds outfielder Ival Goodman hit a three-run home run at Ebbets Field that lands and stays on top of the Schaefer Beer scoreboard in right field. Rules at the time dictate that it is still considered in play, so Goodman rounded the bases for the easiest inside-the-park home run ever. In 1947 Reds pitcher Ewell Blackwell, after having thrown a no-hitter his last time out, lost out on throwing a second consecutive no-no when Dodgers second baseman Eddie Stanky single with one out in the ninth inning. In 1959 Sandy Koufax struck out 16 Phillies batters to set a new record for strikeouts in a night game.

Brooklyn Dodgers Goodies at Lelands - Mullin Drawing, Koufax Jersey and the Movie "42"

2017 Topps Now -- #272 & #273 - Bellinger and Seager's Home Run Explosion

It's only fitting that the 10th Cody Bellinger 2017 Topps Now card of the year would celebrate an historic run that saw him hit ten home runs in ten days -- a first for a rookie in MLB history. Per Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"I'm having a blast," Bellinger said. "I think what really tops it off is how well we're playing as a team. It's fun to watch. It's fun to be around. We're just clicking on all cylinders."

Homers are starting to get contagious.

Last night was Corey Seager's turn with the round-tripper parade. He slugged three home runs and almost accomplished something that had never been done. He came close to recording the only "home run cycle" in Baseball history -- Seager recording one-run, two-run and three-run home runs. Amazingly, he had the chance to hit a grand slam to complete the feat when he came up with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but lined out a deep left-centerfield. Per Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"It's just one of those nights where balls go where you want it to and you're putting good swings on it and they're going out of the park," Seager said.

2017 Topps Series 2 - The Dodgers Variation Cards

There are four short-printed Dodger variation cards available in packs of 2017 Topps Series 2. Take a look at all of them below. I have paired each one with its normal base version. Notably, Jackie Robinson and Sandy Koufax have replaced Yasiel Puig and Kenta Maeda, respectively, on their cards. They are referred to as Legends Variations.

I also thought it was very accurate of Topps to make sure that the "LA" logo for the Koufax card reflects what the logo actually looked like during his playing days. As you can see, the "LA" is much skinnier than it is today -- much like how my waste-line has ballooned in size as the years have gone by.

2017 Topps Now -- #270 -- Cody Bellinger Fastest to Reach 21 Homers

Cody Belling just keeps breaking records, and as long as he continues Topps will be sure to commemorate it. In fact, since he joined the Dodgers Topps has issued eight different 2017 Topps Now cards that include him -- which has got to be some kind of record in itself.

Well, now there are nine Topps Now cards.

Blog Kiosk: 6/20/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Yesterday was bonkers.

Not only did staff ace Clayton Kershaw give up an uncharacteristic four home runs, but the evening also saw a home run parade by both clubs that resulted in a total of eight homers in the game. Two of which were slugged by fast-rising rookie Cody Bellinger. In fact, his two home runs give him 21 on the year - giving him his fifth multihomer game so far and the National League lead in the category after only 51 games as a major leaguer. Per Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"It's crazy," said Bellinger, who made his big league debut on April 25. "A month and a half ago, if you told me what I was gonna do, I'd probably call you crazy."
Despite the poor showing on the mound, Kershaw recorded his 10th victory of the season and the Dodgers have now won ten out of the past eleven games. Photo above via Joc Pederson on twitter. Below are more links to check out:

Wiki Fun at the Giants Expense - Who's Your Daddy?

As a Dodger fan few things provide more joy than the schadenfreude at seeing the Giants do so poorly.

They are currently on pace to lose 100 games this season, and got absolutely shellacked by Rockies star third baseman Nolan Arenado yesterday afternoon. The kid was a one-bat wrecking-machine on Sunday. Not only did Nolan knock out his first "cycle" of his career at the plate, but he capped off the feat with a walk-off homer against Giants closer Mark Melancon to win the game.

And to add insult to injury, an enterprising fan decided to troll the Giants a bit on Wikipedia.

That person added the line,
"He is also the Father of the San Francisco Giants."
Doh!

Who's your daddy... Nolan's your daddy!

Kiké Hernández had quite a day yesterday. After having been a focus of a recent article (link here) about his father's winning battle against cancer, he went out and had a fantastic game on Father's Day. Kiké recorded two doubles, two walks and a game-saving catch in the eight inning to salvage the game. (Watch it here) Per Jeremy Vernon and Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"I was playing pretty shallow and Joey Votto is a good enough hitter that I didn't want him to shoot one the other way," said Hernandez. "The fans were talking a lot of trash, so if there was a ball hit anywhere near me, I had to catch it or throw him out at the plate. Off the bat I had a pretty good jump, but I didn't realize how shallow I was. I felt like I ran forever."
