Last night was the fifth annual Kershaw's Ping Pong 4 Purpose charity event at Dodger Stadium and by all accounts it was a blast. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“You’re not only coming here supporting a teammate for a good cause, but you’re coming to have fun and meet a lot of cool people,” said Kiké Hernández. “It’s a pretty special event.”As part of the evening, the Kershaw's presented the Kershaw’s Challenge Impact Award to Magic Johns for his work with the Magic Johnson Foundation. The pic above features that presentation, via Magic Johnson on twitter. BTW, the winners of the ping pong tournament were a couple of fellows named Mike Singer and Michael Weisberg. Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1991 Montreal Expos hurler Dennis Martinez throws a perfect game against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, 2-0. This is the first no-hitter by an opposing pitcher in Dodger Stadium's history.
- Happy Birthday, Freddie Fitzsimmons!
- Per Fabian Ardaya at MLB.com; "Bellinger buoyed by tight-knit group of friends."
The group still talks about the future, even without having the Los burritos to bond them. Group texts give them a chance to relive old memories, and to even humble one of baseball's new stars if they feel it's necessary."We'll all still tell Cody that he sucks to his face, you know what I mean?" Luke said. "Just joking around, but that's just the kind of group of guys that we were around."
- Per Jeff Sullivan at FanGraphs; "Welcome Back, Brandon Morrow"
The Dodgers saw *something.* Maybe it was just Morrow’s track record. Maybe it was that, in Morrow’s final 2016 appearance, his fastball averaged nearly 98. You don’t need much of a reason to give a guy a shot. Morrow had the offseason he wanted to have, and he’s regained all of his strength. He doesn’t, at least for now, feel any discomfort anywhere in his body. And so almost out of nowhere, Morrow is throwing like he did as a draft pick.
- Other than last nights ping pong tournament this little bit of news caused quite a lot of speculation. Per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA; "Dodgers to call up catcher Kyle Farmer from OKC." Many are wondering if this is a precursor to a big trade.
The extremely popular soon-to-be 27-year-old (on August 17) 6′-0″ / 214-pound backstop is in the midst of a banner season with the OKC Dodgers, where he has a current slash-line of .339 / .411 / .468 for an outstanding OPS of .879. Farmer has also slugged six home runs, 13 doubles and one triple while driving in 29 runs with the team’s Triple-A affiliate.
- Per Mark Whicker at the OC Register; "Adrian Beltre is the 3,000-hit man who Dodgers let get away."
In 1997, the Dodgers played in Cooperstown’s now-defunct Hall of Fame Game, played the day after the inductions, but Beltre was along for the ride at age 18.“I’m glad you’re here today,” General Manager Fred Claire told him. “Because after you finish your career, this is where you’ll wind up.”
Third basemen are commandos. Nobody ever had to tell them about exit velocity. They have always worn it on their shoulders and collarbones. If they didn’t play hurt they wouldn’t play at all. Beltre takes it to a bit of an extreme. He doesn’t use a protective cup. “I’ve got confidence in my hands,” he has said.

- Per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA; "Meet Quakes right-hander Sven Schueller."
