Blog Kiosk: 7/3/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Over the weekend a new Major League record was set when the league collectively hit 1,101 home runs to set a new record for homers during a month. Naturally, Topps released a new 2017 Topps Now card to celebrate the occasion, and it includes rookie slugger Cody Bellinger on the front of the card. Check it out above. Unfortunately, the card is already sold out -- 1,247 cards were made. Check out the reverse of the card on the right.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1925 Robins (Dodgers) second baseman Milt Stock recorded his fourth consecutive four-hit game -- setting an NL mark. In 1958 the Dodgers, in their 35th home game ever in Los Angeles, reached the one million attendance mark.  At Ebbets Field they drew 1,028,258 fans total all season the year prior. In 1974 Dodgers reliever Dr. Mike Marshall appeared in his 13th consecutive game, setting a major league record.  The streak also ended on this day when he didn't make an appearance during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. In 1991 the Dodgers traded José González for outfielder Mitch Webster. In 1993 Don Drysdale died of a heart attack in Montreal after broadcasting the Dodgers’ game against the Expos. In 2013 Yasiel Puig becomes the first player to be named Player of the Month for the first month he plays in the major leagues in the 55-year history of the award.

• ICYMI: Cody Bellinger, Clayton Kershaw, Kenley Jansen and Corey Seager have been named to the 2017 NL All-Star Team. Furthermore, Justin Turner has been selected as a Final Vote candidate and has the opportunity to join Bellinger, Jansen, Kershaw and Seager on the NL All-Star team via fan balloting, which begins immediately on Dodgers.com or MLB.com/vote, and runs through this Thursday, July 6, at 1:00 p.m. PT.
• Per ESPN; "Dodgers' Kenley Jansen irked by lack of fan support for starters."

"I'll say it loud and clear again: It's the Dodger fans' fault," the closer said....

"We should have voted for those two guys," Jansen said. "They deserved to be the starters."

• This mornings Baseball America Prospect Report makes note of Dodger outfielder DJ Peters:

L.A.’s No. 21 prospect had himself quite a Sunday. The fourth-rounder from Western Nevada JC hit three homers, including a grand slam, as high Class A Rancho Cucamonga beat Lancaster (Astros) 12-2. Peters now leads the California League with 16 homers.

• Topps will be at the All-Star Game FanFest in Miami and they will have a wrapper redemption program for the event. Those who open three sealed packs of a 2017 Topps MLB product (excluding stickers) at the company’s booth will receive an six card set that includes Clayton Kershaw. • Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Ryu to undergo foot scan; will skip next start: Dodgers taking precautions to avoid lingering issues."

"The foot's bothering him, so we're going to move him back," Roberts said. "We're going to get another type of scan on Monday, just to make sure." Roberts said that Ryu wasn't placed on the disabled list because on Sunday he reported improvement.

• Per Chris Cwik at Big League Stew; "Babe Ruth items sold by Charlie Sheen go for over $4 million total."

Ruth’s 1927 World Series ring and an original copy of the agreement sending Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees were sold in a Lelands.com auction. Each item went for over $2 million individually.

The ring fetched $2,093,927 in the auction. The contract sold for $2,303,320. Sheen revealed himself to be the seller of both pieces of memorabilia a few days before the auction ended, which may have raised the price of both items.
