Blog Kiosk: 8/1/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

This does make me feel kinda bad. After all, their loss ended up being our gain. Featured above is a AP Wire Photo from the very last Brooklyn Dodger day game at Ebbets Field. It is currently on auction at RMY Auctions. Go here to check it out. Per the descriptor:
Dated, September 22nd -- The Loyal Few -- Only 6,662 fans showed up at Ebbets Field today to watch Dodgers play Philadelphia in what may be the final day game to be played by the Dodgers in New York City. The club, reportedly moving to Los Angeles, has only one more game in this ball park -- Tuesday night against Pittsburgh. The Dodgers, last year's National League champs, rewarded the loyal few with a 7-3 win over Philadelphia. There were no ceremonies to mark what was probably the last Sunday of Brooklyn Dodger baseball.

Then Farhan Zaidi’s phone rang. Zaidi is the Dodgers’ general manager, and the voice on the other line had grown familiar in recent days. Jon Daniels runs the Texas Rangers, and with 20 minutes to go before the deadline, he was ready to make a deal.
Reality had crashed on Daniels in the hours leading up to 4 p.m., when no market materialized for Darvish and efforts to create one came up empty. Darvish had his flaws. Teams had their hang-ups. The trade market isn’t always rational. And even though Daniels had told Darvish after his previous start that he almost certainly would be traded by July 31, the clock was ticking, the deadline approaching, the Dodgers the only team left in the sweepstakes.
Shortly after the Dodgers traded for Yu Darvish, Buehler—who was not part of the package—got his first Triple-A win. Buehler struck out six, walked one and allowed just three hits in five shutout innings as Oklahoma City beat Tacoma (Mariners) 3-1. Buehler is the Dodgers’ top prospect and was off-limits in trade talk, even for a pitcher as talented as Darvish.
  • Per TMZ; "Yasiel Puig Brashes TMZ Tour ... Meets MLB Legend Onboard!"
  • Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Smith, former Dodger Stadium exec, dies: 'He set the standard, no one did it better,' says former club owner O'Malley."
"For more than 30 years, Bob was responsible for the cleanliness and safety of Dodger Stadium," said former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley. "He set the standard, no one did it better. My thoughts are with his wife, Lucy, and family. I've lost a very good friend."
