"It Happened on Flatbush" - an Vintage Movie Poster at REA

Robert Edwards Auction is closing up on their current Fall offering this weekend, so I wanted to point to one particular item I ran into while thumbing through the catalog. Check out the above circa 1942 vintage movie poster put out by Twentieth Century Fox. It is for a film called, "It Happened on Flatbush" -- a Baseball comedy that is inspired by the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers. (auction link)

I mention this because as I was doing a little bit of research I discovered that someone had uploaded it onto youtube, and I figured this is a perfect opportunity to let you all know about it (if you've haven't already seen the movie). Watch it at the very bottom, or go here (youtube link).

As you may know, the 1941 team is considered by many to be one of the best to have ever played and not win a championship. In fact, noted sabermetric guru Bill James referred to the club as, "The Greatest Teams That Never Was."

After reviewing the team roster it's easy to see why. This Dodger team, lead by Leo Durocher, includes four future Hall of Famers (Billy Herman, Joe Medwick, Pee Wee Reese, and Dixie Walker), a league-leading slugging rookie named Pete Reiser and a first baseman that would win the MVP with 34 homers and 120 RBI's. On top of that, their pitching staff included two-20 game winners having career years (Kirby Higbe and Whitlow Wyatt) and a catcher named Mickey Owen -- considered one of the best defensive backstops in the game.

Unfortunately, the Dodgers would not prevail that October. They faced off, for the first time ever in their history, against the New York Yankees, and lost. Of note, Game 4 of the series featured a dropped third strike by the usually dependable Mickey Owen in the ninth inning that lead to four unanswered runs and a Yankee come-from-behind victory.
