Check out Sal "The Barber" Maglie getting a big smooch from his catcher, Roy Campanella, in the above September 25, 1956 United Press photo. Per the descriptor on the reverse:
MAGLIE NO-HITS PHILS, 5-0, Brooklyn, N.Y.: Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella plants a big kiss on the cheek of pitcher Sal Maglie in the dressing room here Sept. 25, after the 39-year-old Giant cast-off hurled a no-hit, no-run game against the Phils to move the Brooks to within a half game of the league-leading Milwaukee Braves. The 5-0 win was the first no-hitter in Sal's long career, and he is the oldest hurler since Cy Young to pitch a hitless game."Photo above via eBay (link here). Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1957 the Dodgers, Walter O'Malley, purchased a 44-passenger twin engine airplane for $775,000. They would be the first team to own their own plane. - Per Alden Gonzalez at ESPN; "Rams' Sean McVay, Dodgers' Dave Roberts share leadership bond."
It was simple, but it emphasized something critical: "One of the best things a leader can provide is clarity.""If you can give the players no gray, but clarity," McVay said, "and they understand exactly what it is we want to get done, how we want to handle things, I think that's a very powerful thing."
- This horse is an obvious winner. Via Mike Willman at the Paulick Report; "Pee Wee Reese Rolls To Victory In Joe Hernandez At Santa Anita."
If there is such a thing as The Big Dodger in the Sky, he was smiling down on Santa Anita on Monday, as Pee Wee Reese went to the front in the $75,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes under Joe Talamo, winning by 2 3/4 lengths. Owned and bred in California by Nick Alexander and trained by Phil D'Amato, the 5-year-old full horse by Tribal Rule – named for the late Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame shortstop – got 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:12.37.
- I am sure this will be one of many illustrious awards he'll be winning over his entire career. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider; "Bellinger named 2017 Sportsman of the Year by LA Sports Council." BTW, longtime Kings broadcaster Bob Miller will also receive a Lifetime Achievement award from the LA Sports Council, as well.
