Welcome to the Blue, Jake Peter!

I blame the flu!

I know this trade occurred two weeks ago, so apologize for this late post. As you already know, the Dodgers completed a three-team trade that netted them a reliever named Scott Alexander and a utility player named Jake Peter. This post celebrates Jake's addition to the ballclub. Per a Dodger press release:

The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the completion of a three-team trade with the White Sox and the Royals, with the Dodgers receiving left-handed pitcher Scott Alexander and minor league infielder Jake Peter; the White Sox receiving left-handed pitcher Luis Avilán, right-handed pitcher Joakim Soria and cash considerations; and the Royals receiving infielder Erick Mejia and right-handed pitcher Trevor Oaks.

Peter, 24, split the season between Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham of the White Sox organization, combining to hit .279 with 63 runs, 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, 49 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 120 games. Peter spent the majority of the season playing second base (97 games), but also appeared in eight games at third base, nine games in left field and five games in right field. Over four minor league seasons, he has posted a .282/.347/.394 slashline with 86 doubles, 24 homers and 185 RBI in 440 games. The Mason City, Iowa, native was selected by the White Sox in the seventh round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Creighton University.

This pickup is something we fans are getting accustomed to. Peter is a ballplayer who can play both the outfield and infield positions, and he has recently found some success at the plate. In other words, we hoping that he becomes a Kiké Hernandez type of player -- or goodness, Chris Taylor. Per a Des Moines Register story from Aug:

This season the infielder has improved in Charlotte, hitting .347 with four doubles and four home runs in his first 12 games in Triple-A. It all comes after a slow start to the season, when Peter hit just .173 in April. 

But he turned his season around when he cut down on a leg kick he had brought back this year. The leg kick was something Peter hadn’t used since high school and he struggled to get the timing down with it when the season started. 

“There was that fine line between being too big with it and being too small with it,” Peter said. “But once I figured that out and got the timing to go along with it, I think that’s when it finally started to take off.”
