This is a good beginning.
Today is the first full squad workout for the Dodgers, and as you can see in the pic above (via @Dodgers on twitter) they began the morning huddled in the clubhouse like a team on a mission. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I think it is a good sign,” (Dave) Roberts said. “It’s a good sign as far as those guys showing up wanting to work, and it’s our jobs as coaches to really understand we have a long way to go, so we’ve got to temper it a little bit.
“It’s funny. Outside of the kind of normal pleasantries of seeing guys you hadn’t seen, it’s sort of business as usual, and I like that mindset here. It’s very workman-like, methodical, and that’s kind of what we want our ball club to be.”Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1983 22-year old Dodger hurler Fernando Valenzuela becomes the first ballplayer awarded an $1,000,000 salary during arbitration.
- Happy Birthday, Oscar Roettger, Dick Siebert, Gail Hopkins, Dave Stewart, Josh Reddick & Fabio Castillo!
- Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA; "Kirk Gibson will throw ceremonial first pitch on opening day at Dodger Stadium."
“We’re going to be able to help a lot of people through the money raised during Opening week,” said Gibson. “I’m honored to help kick off the Dodgers’ 60th anniversary celebration, and am looking forward to re-living many magical moments at Dodger Stadium on opening day and on my bobblehead night.”
- Per Andy McCullough at the LA Times; "Dodgers All-Star Cody Bellinger plans to avoid a sophomore slump."
"That was just me knowing that one good year doesn't mean ...," Bellinger said, using an expletive. "I know there's going to be a lot of guys coming after not just me, but our team this year."

- ICYMI: The Chase Utley signing is now official. He signed a two-deal at $1MM per season. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"We've built a good relationship for the short time I've been around here," said Utley. "I have a lot of trust in the guys in the front office and I think they do the same with me. I was grateful they allowed me to continue to work out there and now I'm here."
- Via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Dodgers hope to rebuild Baez's confidence."
"I believe in myself," said Baez, who turns 30 next month. "I feel 100 percent. I'm confident I can help and have a good season."...
"Obviously, he was a big part of what we did the entire season," Roberts said. "I know he was disappointed not being on the postseason roster, rightfully so. As far as the fan reception, all he's known is this organization. He cares about this team, he cares about the fans. To hear the way he was received, I know I was sensitive to it. I hope it doesn't have any ill effects."
- I think I need this. Per Ryan Cracknell at Beckett; "2018 Funko Pop MLB Vinyl Figures Include First Lineup of Players," and it includes Clayton Kershaw. See it on the right. It is expected to be released in May.
- An old friend alert. Via Jeff Todd at MLB.com; "Giants Agree To Terms With Tony Watson." Also, Mark Polishuk at MLB Trade Rumors writes; "Padres To Sign A.J. Ellis."
- Via Chad Moriyama at Dodgers Digest; "Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, Matt Kemp, Dave Roberts try to say ‘Happy New Year’ in Korean … fail."
- Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily introduces us to a new Topps Baseball card brand called 2018 Topps Big League Baseball, and it is geared towards younger collectors. See preview pics of a Dodger dog and a home run leaders card with Bellinger below. This set is scheduled to be released in July.
