Blog Kiosk: 3/21/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

I missed out on the Dodgers' First Look event yesterday afternoon. This is an annual soiree put together to introduce the upcoming seasons stadium menu items and giveaways to the local media. They brought out all kinds of new items; including a carne asada torta that I will have to try out.

Sue Jo at Dodger Insider provided some details and plenty of photos from the event, here. David Young at True Blue LA put together his own write-up: New Food Items (here) and Giveaways (here).

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1966 the Dodgers and Astros are the first Major League teams to play on artificial grass when they face each other for a spring training game in the Astrodome.

  • Podcast: FnA welcomes Dodgers pre- and postgame host, Tim Cates, to talk about how Justin Turner's hand injury will affect the defending NL Champs (Podcast Link).
  • Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA; "Dodgers option Alex Verdugo, reassign Rocky Gale to minor league camp."
  • Here comes Farmer. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Farmer playing way into mix for roster spot."
"He's had a great spring and his ability to conduct an at-bat off the bench, to catch and play third base, obviously there's added value with Justin [out]," Roberts said. "He's comfortable at third base, and I wanted somebody who could catch [Wilmer] Font and [Scott] Alexander."
A Dr. Robert Klapper provides more details:

“I started learning about launch angle two years ago,” Bellinger told Yahoo Sports. “Ever since I learned about it and made some tweaks to my swing, I’ve seen results positively. So I’m kinda in on it. I think I’ve always had a natural, uppercut swing, so it’s a little easier for me to do it. But I’m pretty satisfied with the results so far.”
  • Our Double-A farmclub Tulsa Drillers have been selected to participate in Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversion ("Fun Cup") program. Per a Drillers press release:
Every Tuesday home game starting on June 19, the Drillers will play as Los Petroleros de Tulsa, or "the Oil-Men of Tulsa." With the city of Tulsa being the original Oil Capital of the World, this will pay homage to the men and women who worked hard bringing the "black gold" into the world and making the city thrive.
During these home games, Los Petroleros will wear alternate black and gold jerseys and hats (take a look at the cap on the right and a logo below) that will be auctioned off after the season with the proceeds donated to a local Hispanic organization. The games will also feature a culturally-relevant experience through music, concessions and promotions.
  • BTW, our Single-A club at Rancho Cucamonga will also participate in Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversion. They will be known as the Rancho Cucamonga Temblores. Below is their cap. Go here for a full schedule of games.

  • The Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers will transform into the Cielo Azul de Oklahoma City for Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversion. Go here for more information. Below is the team logo.
The name Cielo Azul - translated to "Blue Sky" - was derived from three key factors:
  • Incorporating the color blue as part of the Dodgers organization.
  • The vibrancy of Oklahoma's blue skies, and the breadth of the diversity of Hispanic/Latino culture that resides under those skies.
  • A tribute to Dodgers legend Fernando Valenzuela, who looked up at the sky during his windup.
  • This is funny:
