Over the years I've posted up a bunch of vintage press photos from the golden era of the game. Today I thought I would pull something out that's a little more modern. Featured above is an 1983 AP photo showing a play at the plate that we are not likely to ever witness again. Hall of Famer Gary Carter -- himself a onetime Dodger -- masterfully blocks the plate to stop Dodger outfielder Ron Roenicke from scoring. (eBay Auction Link)

- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1943 the Brooklyn Dodgers received soon-to-be Hall of Fame centerfielder Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner and Al Glossop from the Phillies in exchange for veteran infielder Babe Dahlgren. Although, Waner did not join the club for the 1943 Baseball season. Instead, he asked to be placed on the voluntary retirement list and took a wartime job at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Oklahoma City. Lloyd would eventually join Brooklyn for the 1944 season (playing briefly with his brother Paul -- a fellow Hall of Famer), but would eventually be released by mid-June -- He slashed .286/.412/.286/.697 in just 14 at-bats, primarily as a pinch hitter.

- Via Alyson Footer at MLB.com; "Jansen ready for first Cactus League action: Dodgers' closer scheduled to pitch one inning against Royals."
Though Jansen was hit with the same virus that knocked out a portion of the Dodgers' roster recently, that wasn't the reason for his delayed game action. This was always the plan. As a back-end reliever, there is not a lot of prep time required to get ready for the regular season."I'm going to assume he's going to pitch another [inning] at some point," Roberts said. "We kind of slow-played him getting out there, so he feels good. He's excited."
- Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA; "Andrew Toles is healthy & working his way back into Dodgers plans."
“Andrew has always been a part of the conversation. He broke camp with us last year,” manager Dave Roberts said. “It was an unfortunate injury, he worked hard to get back with his strength and health. He’s having a very good camp.”
- Via JP Hoornstra at the OC Register; "Dennis Santana aims to be the Dodgers’ next position player-turned-pitcher."
The Dodgers already have two converted position players in their bullpen, Kenley Jansen and Pedro Baez. Santana, like his predecessors, is in the process of evolving beyond his raw tools to get the most out of his right arm.“It’s just fine-tuning command, understanding to pound the bottom of the zone, taking a little bit of (velocity) off the changeup and how to get big league hitters out; how to game plan,” said Brandon Gomes, the Dodgers’ director of player development. “That’s a lot for a 21-year-old kid, but the stuff is electric.”
