Blog Kiosk: 5/1/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

This feels like one of those moments in time when nothing is going right. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“We’re going to be 100 percent fine,” Bellinger said. “We’ve got an unreal group of guys in here … We’ve just got to play with a chip on our shoulder right now and play as hard as we can until we get our guys back.”
As with all downturns, this too will pass.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1906 the Brooklyn Superbas (Dodgers) are no-hit by Philadelphia southpaw John Lush, 6-0. In 1920 the Dodgers and Boston Braves play a 26-inning game - the longest in major league history. Starting pitchers Leon Cadore of Brooklyn and Joe Oeschger of Boston both finish the game, as it ends in a 1-1 tie after nearly four hours of play. In 1965 Tommy Davis dislocates and breaks his ankle while sliding into second base trying to break up a double play. In 2012 a new Dodgers ownership group takes over the franchise -- headed by Stan Kasten, Mark Walter at Guggenheim Financial and Magic Johnson.

  • Crap! Corey Seager is on the DL with a right UCL sprain and will have Tommy John Surgery -- ending his season. Breyvic Valera has been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"My arm kind of told me," said Seager, who expressed relief at the finality of the diagnosis after months of wondering when his ligament would rupture. "It's almost peace of mind now. It's nice to have a plan to reach goals, instead of the unknown."
...
"We're still kind of digesting this news right now, too," said Zaidi, sharing fans' angst. "And we still feel good about the lineup we can field on an everyday basis. We're not as talented without Corey in there, but we're going to have to adopt an approach of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. That's what made us so good last year. We might have had a certain threshold [for a trade] and might be more motivated now, but we still have guys we think can take everyday at-bats."
  • I seem to always turn to Jon Weisman when things are bad in Dodgerland. Yesterday's Seager news is no exception. Check out his recent post titled; "What Seager’s lost season signifies for the 2018 Dodgers."
One thread of conversation I have completely rejected during these ungainly first 30 days is that this Dodger season seemed dramatically different somehow from those recent comeback years.
Let’s be perfectly clear. In four of the past five National League West-winning seasons came extended stretches where, if you weren’t of an optimistic mindset, the team looked horrific, the injuries devastating and the roof entirely caving in.
