Blog Kiosk: 5/15/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Here is one of what must have been numerous different conceptual drawings put together by architects for the O'Malley's. The drawing above, recently shared by MLB Cathedrals on twitter, is dated 1957 and was created by a local father and son duo of Stiles and Robert Clements.

Stiles Clements is famous for his art deco and streamline moderne styles in Los Angeles. He designed the El Capitan Theater Building, the Mayan Theater, Adamson House in Malibu, Samson Uniroyal Tire Factory (present day Citadel Outlets mall), the Wiltern Theatre and Jefferson High School. His son, Robert, had designed more than 110 buildings on Wilshire Boulevard alone.

BTW, Dodger Stadium was designed by New York based architect and civil engineer, Emil Praeger. Below are more links to check out
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1956 the Dodgers purchase starting pitcher Sal "the Barber" Maglie from the Indians.
  • Happy Birthday, Alex VerdugoJack CorcoranJimmy WasdellAl McBeanBill North & Josh Beckett!
  • BTW, it's JT Day! He is scheduled to be back today -- along with Logan Forsythe.
  • Audio: Breaking Blue Season 2 Ep 1[Los Angeles] - Steve Mason talks with Dodgers Nation Editor Brook Smith and Greg Bergman about what's wrong with the Dodgers to start the year and when's the right time to panic (Audio Link).
  • Check out this new Dodgers Blog called "Dodgers Dugout" here. It's actually a class project for a student, so I don't know how long the blog will be around.
  • I hate that Jon Weisman has reminded me of the worst season of Dodger Baseball that I can recall, but like a Nascar spectator witnessing a crash I can't help but stare. Check out his recent post at Dodger Thoughts, entitled "Presenting the heart-stopping, game-dropping, low-flying, win-defying, mental-lapsing, season-collapsing, legendary 2005 Los Angeles Dodgers," here. Yeah, that was a really bad year filled with some really bad players.
  • Per Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors; "Andrew Friedman Discusses Dodgers’ Poor Start." This is a nice roundup of the more salient point from the LA Times article.
  • Via Allan Yamashige at Dodgers Digest; "Max Muncy has been legitimately productive."
Muncy has played in 21 of the Dodgers 40 games, and has racked up 63 plate appearances. His 112 wRC+ ranks fifth on the Dodgers, his .455 slugging percentage is fourth, and his .788 OPS is tied with Cody Bellinger for third. There have been 323 batters with at least 60 PA this season, and Muncy’s 112 wRC+ ranks 128th.
DeFratus was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, just days after he pitched the league’s first nine-inning complete game shutout of the season on just 89 pitches.
Against Memphis, the 30-year-old right-hander allowed just four hits and struck out three. He retired 16 of the first 17 batters and 26 of the 31 he faced. It was the first shutout by an OKC pitcher since Jake Buchanon on May 20, 2014 and first at home since Luis Mendoza’s no-hitter against Salt Lake on Aug. 14, 2009.
  • OMG! The 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout Autograph Superfractor (1 of 1) just sold for $400,000! Wha....? That's insane! Per Ryan Cracknell at Beckett; "Meet the Man Who Paid $400k for the 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout Superfractor Autograph."
He’s very direct in his approach in seeing this, and his entire Trout collection, as investments.
“This is a hobby for most people but I saw it as a business opportunity,” he said.
Oancea is someone known for taking risks. In fact, it’s a big part of how he made a name for himself. In the past few years, he’s made large bets and won on long shots like the Kansas City Royals winning the World Series in 2015 and the Broncos taking the Super Bowl in 2016 long before they emerged. Like before the seasons started.
With both wagers, Oancea made millions.
