Blog Kiosk: 5/17/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

There's nothing better than a talking horse to distract you from the season. Featured above is Mr. Ed, his straight-talking co-star Alan Young and the great Sandy Koufax at Dodger Stadium in 1963.

As you know, the Dodgers were special guest of the show that year in an episode called,  "Leo Durocher Meets Mister Ed". You can check out highlights from that episode here.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1947 then Pirates slugger Hank Greenberg reached out to Jackie Robinson during a game at Forbes Field. While standing on first base he asked Jackie if he was hurt during a collision with him earlier in the game and then says, "Stick in there. You're doing fine. Keep your chin up." Knowing that Greenberg knew first hand the difficulties he had been facing, due to his own Jewish heritage, Jackie named him his "diamond hero." In 1978 Dodger slugger Lee Lacy hit his third consecutive home run as a pinch-hitter -- becoming the first player to have ever done so.

  • Per Glenn Sattell at MLB.com; "Roberts confident 'we'll turn this thing around'"
"It's a team-wide slump essentially," manager Dave Roberts said. "I can't recall anything like this, where we just haven't had any semblance of consistency from any facet."
It's difficult to explain, but that's how slumps work.
"So for me, the coaches, try to encourage these guys to stay the course whether it's out of the 'pen, starters or timely hitting," Roberts continued. "There's still a lot of good things as far as the way the guys are playing. Hopefully results will turn."

This was the first year the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate was in Vegas. I spent parts of three seasons with their old farm team in Albuquerque, so I was ecstatic to get there and get some … at-bats.
The plan for me was to catch two games and serve as DH in another one for the 51s. It was perfect. I’d catch Friday, DH Saturday and catch Sunday. That was ideal because it meant I could get to the ballpark a little bit later on Saturday — the day of the Preakness Stakes.
  • I'm posting this only slightly in jest. After all, I yearn for a Dodger victory, so I'll take whatever I can get. Check out "THIS" Dodger team that recently beat the Marlins. Per Robert Avery at Chron.com in Houston; "Dodgers topple Marlins 10-2 to reach Mustang City Championship game." At this point, I think I'd trade our entire team for these group of youngsters.
