Rookie pitcher Caleb Ferguson and the rest of the relief staff struggled, but the Dodgers offense didn't give up. They fought til the bitter end, but fell short as they lost to the Pirates, 11-9. Per Bob Cohn at MLB.com:
"Overall tonight, we didn't pitch well," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "There's only so much an offense can do."
Said Kemp: "I don't think we're ever out of games, especially the way our offense has been swinging the bat. It was a tough day today. They scored a lot of runs. We tried to make it into a good game, we did. We came up short, but [Thursday] we've got a chance to win the series."Kemp went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and a three-run home run to drive in five runs total in the game.

- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1898 Brooklyn owner Charles Ebbets stepped in to be the teams manager for the remainder of the season. The team would not fare very well. The Dodgers would have a record of 38-68 under Ebbets and finish in 10th place overall with a 54-91 record. In 1982 Steve Garvey played in his 1,000th consecutive game. He would receive a standing ovation from fans at Dodger Stadium. In 1995 Tommy Lasorda won his 1,500th game as a major league manager when his Dodgers defeated the Expos, 7-1.

- Báez's stay in Triple-A has been very short. As you know less than 24 hours ago the Dodgers demoted Pedro Báez to Oklahoma City. This morning we get word that he has just been recalled, along with left-handed reliever Edward Paredes. Tony Cingrani is now on the 10-day DL and rookie hurler Caleb Ferguson is sent back to Triple-A.

There’s no one single explanation for Stripling’s rise. He’s added some bulk to improve his durability. He’s gained more experience, and more familiarity. As the anecdote goes, Stripling is now throwing his curveball as hard as he can, as opposed to trying to guide it. And Stripling is a four-pitch pitcher, who can locate all four pitches. His slider and curveball in particular have become great weapons. Stripling’s K-BB% against lefties last year was 14%. Now it’s double that number.

- Do you remember Dodger pitcher PJ Colon? A few days ago we claimed him off of waivers from the Mets. Four days later he was traded back to New York. Naturally, a good-natured fellow like Colon had some good fun at the situation. Via Torrey Hart at Yahoo Sports; "Traded baseball player sums up life of a minor-leaguer with perfect tweet."

He said: "If we were better at drawing I think we would have a tenth of the support we do. The attraction for most people is in persevering with severe shortcomings."Our aim is to make them vaguely recognisable without being completely offensive.
