I thought this would be a fun photo to share today. Featured above is a 1938 Underwood & Underwood press photo of the soon-to-be Dodger coach Babe Ruth that will soon be available through Memory Lane. He stands aboard a motorcade parade float promoting the New York World's Fair that will open the following year. (Auction Link)
The vintage photograph was taken on April 30, 1938 -- a full year ahead of the opening of the World's Fair. It is also about 2 1/2 months prior to him signing on to be the Brooklyn Dodgers first base coach.
BTW, the jersey you see Ruth wearing sold last year through SCP Auctions at $227,854. A closer look at the uniform can be seen on the right. Click on the pic to embiggen.
Best yet, I ran into a vintage newsreel of this parade that features Babe Ruth. You can see him hurl a signed baseball card to enthusiastic parade attendees -- undoubtedly hurting his arm in the process. Check that out below.
