Blog Kiosk: 7/18/2018 - Dodgers Links - Machado!

Is he, or is he not coming westward?

According to numerous scribes and prognosticators, the Manny Machado sweepstakes has been won by the Dodgers. He will be changing from the horrid orange to majestic Blue, and this Dodger fan cannot be more excited. Of course, it has yet to be confirmed by the league and the respective teams. Nevertheless, I'll take last night's "Selfie" moment as a sign. He's coming!

BTW, you should check out this fantastic photoshopped pic of the Selfie -- showing Machado in Blue -- here. Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1939 the Dodgers receive shortstop Pee Wee Reese from the Red Sox in exchange for $35,000, three minor leaguers and a player to be named later. It is later discovered that a poor scouting report filled out by then current Boston shortstop Joe Cronin purposefully downplayed Reese's abilities for fear of losing his job. In 1949 Jackie Robinson testified in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities to express his disagreement with actor Paul Robeson's assertion that African-Americans would not fight a war against Russia due to America's history of racial animus. In 1957 Gil Hodges hit his 12th career grand slam to tie a National League record held by both Rogers Hornsby and Ralph Kiner.
  • Happy Birthday, Johnny Hopp!
  • I wanted to send out my deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Ontario Reign (an LA Kings affiliate) and NHL goalie Ray Emery. He tragically passed away over the weekend in a drowning accident at the age of 35. RIP, Ray Emery.
  • Here's an Honus Wagner story, via Baseball History Daily.
  • Dodger Talk: Andrew Friedman joined David Vassegh on Monday night for an exclusive Dodger Talk interview (Link Here).
  • I see what you're doing here. Redditor u/ItalicSlope wrote; "Kiké Hernandez and The Case of the Extra Tight Pants." There's even a 13 page research study; complete with graphs.
as the season wore on and kiké’s pants changed day by day, i began to wonder if kiké’s pants affected his performance in games. it seemed like the days when he wore his tightest pants were the days he performed the best, but i couldn’t tell if his performance was actually better on those days, or if i just paid more attention because i love looking at his hot butt. the more i thought about kiké’s pants, the more i convinced myself that this research was necessary and important. i worked on multiple research projects in graduate school, but i hadn't actually used my skills in the "real world" yet. this was my chance.
The streaming option was first explored last winter, Manfred said, and would be discussed again in the coming winter.
“We explored some alternatives with the interested parties that might have used some Major League Baseball assets to get greater distribution,” Manfred said. “Unfortunately, a lot of those creative ideas we have affect the balance of power or the economic situation of the distributor or the RSN.
“It’s difficult to convince people to go along with any of these creative ideas. But we will be back at it again during this off-season.”
Verdugo quickly learned how to handle himself as a professional — a key to his success on the field.
“It’s about not having too many ups, not having too many downs. You want to stay consistent,” Verdugo said.
"I really wasn't much of a baseball player (in high school), I had played, but never on varsity and I was going to go play, but I was going to be a middle infielder," he told Omnisport at MLB All-Star Media Day Monday. "(But) I broke my leg, so can't play middle infield, and they're like 'Why don't you try pitching?' and I was like, 'Yeah, OK.'"
