Blog Kiosk: 7/20/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

When Manny met Vinny.

BTW, Manny will wear #8 as a Dodger. Also, it appears that Andrew Toles will be sent down to Triple-A to make room for Machado (via a tweet from Ken Gurnick).

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1906 Brooklyn Superbas (Dodgers) pitcher Mal Eason no-hit the Cardinals in St. Louis, 2-0. In 1925 future Hall of Famer and Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Dazzy Vance struck out 17 Cubs to defeat Chicago 4-3 in 10 innings. In 1970 Dodger hurler Bill Singer no hit the Phillies at Dodger Stadium, 5-0. Singer struck out ten, walked none and committed two errors on the field.

  • Better late than never, eh? Cat Loves the Dodgers shares her pics from this past Friday's game against the Angels at Dodger Stadium.
  • Old friend Brandon Morrow has hit the DL, per Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors.
  • Music to my ears! Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider; "Zaidi: Machado “on board” with team’s preference for position flexibility."
  • This is fun. Per Tim Rogers at Dodgers Nation; "How My Sweater Got on a Dodgers’ Television Broadcast."
  • LOL! Current Phillies coach Pedro Guerrero has been getting autograph request on Baseball cards for former Dodger Pedro Guerrero, and vice versa -- they aren't the same guy. Via James Wagner at the NY Times; "Meet Pedro Guerrero. No, Not THAT Pedro Guerrero." (Hat Tip: Jon Weisman)
As a player and coach in the Dodgers minor leagues, Guerrero received at least two dozen requests a year to sign baseball cards of the other Pedro Guerrero. This year alone, he said he has received 71 cards and counting.
“When we get back, I’m going to have like 40 more cards waiting for me,” said the younger Guerrero recently during a Phillies road trip.
The elder Guerrero is loving all this. “It makes me feel young,” he said, laughing, during a recent telephone interview.
“It’s been fun so far, it’s been a great atmosphere,” Floro answered. “Everyone’s been welcoming me in, trying to help me out as much as possible. It’s been a great experience so far.”
  • Per Steve Gilbert at MLB.com; "Goldschmidt, Ward maintain deep friendship: Dodgers hitting coach gifted All-Star's 2015 Silver Slugger Award."
"I thought it would be cool for Turner to have in his house," Goldschmidt said. "So if he showed it to people, he could tell them, 'Paul Goldschmidt gave me this award and we're very close and we've taught each other so many lessons and our relationship is growing and we're still staying in touch and still talking a lot.'
"Let me put it this way: If I didn't win any of my awards, I don't feel like my life would be any different. But if I hadn't met Turner, my life would be completely different. I wanted him to know how much I care about him and love him and how much he means to me. Yes, he had a big effect on my baseball career, but he completely changed my life trajectory."
  • The trials and tribulations of being a desired prospect. Via JP Hoornstra at the LA Daily News; "For Dodgers prospect Dustin May, a 24-hour whirlwind left him right where he started."
  • Have you heard of Fastball with the Great Lake Loons -- a Dodgers minor league squad? Well, now you have. Per Evan Petzold at From the Nest; "Who is Fastball?"
“When Al, Larry and Kenny came to me about Fastball, I was immediately interested,” Lou E. said through a translator. “To bring someone of his speed and athleticism to the ballpark is what I’ve always been looking for.”
Lou E. took the information he learned of and spoke with Great Lakes Loons General Manager Scott Litle. Upon hearing of Fastball, he sent out a search party to find him and recruit him to Dow Diamond.
  • Phungo was at the recent SABR convention to discuss the Baseball artwork of Andy Warhol. He shares a little bit of his presentation here.
