- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1950 Dodgers outfielder Jim Russell becomes the first ballplayer in major league history to hit a home run from both sides of the plate during a game for the second time in his career. His record is eventually surpassed by Mickey Mantle in 1956 when he does it for a third time. In 1990 super-utilityman Mike Sharperson become the first player in Dodger history to start every infield position in the same season. In 1991 Montreal starter Mark Gardner no-hit the Dodgers for nine innings, but eventually lost the game in the tenth inning. He allowed two singles and reliever Jeff Fassero gave up the winning hit to lose, 1-0. Dodger pitchers Orel Hershiser, Kevin Gross and Jay Howell combine for a two hit shutout. In 1995 the Dodgers signed free agent amateur pitcher Eric Gagne out of Seminole State College. In 2008 the Dodgers received third baseman Casey Blake from the Indians for Jon Meloan and Carlos Santana.

- ICYMI: Andre Ethier will retire, and the Dodgers will honor him with a pregame ceremony on Friday, August 3rd. Jason Bateman will be the emcee. Per a Dodgers press release:
“I look forward to coming back to Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium, places I’m so lucky to have called home for the last 12 years,” said Ethier. “There’s nothing like stepping out on the field at Dodger Stadium and looking up and seeing the faithful Dodger Blue supporting you, and I’m grateful for the reception and support I received in all my years playing there. I’m humbled by this evening and look forward to sharing it all with you.”

The '68 Dodgers remain memorable because of who they became. Steve Garvey, Bill Buckner, Tom Paciorek and Valentine played a combined 70-plus years in the major leagues. “Find me another rookie-league club that had three eventual big-league stars,” Lasorda once told Baseball America (Paciorek, batting .381, was promoted to Class-A Bakersfield after a month in Ogden)....
Those four notable rookies, managed by Lasorda at age 40, make the '68 Ogden team remarkable. None of them viewed it as extraordinary at the time, though. “Man, it was really obvious that they would make it,” pitcher Richard Watson said of his famous teammates. “But you thought you could make it too.”
The convergence of talent is “harder to understand now than it was then,” Valentine said. “Looking back in that rear-view mirror, it's amazing.”
