Blog Kiosk: 7/31/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Last night's power outage hit both the Dodgers and Dodger Stadium. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:

"I haven't seen that one," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts after the game. "They got it resolved quick enough. It was pretty weird."

As for the game, the Dodgers could only round up five hits to score only two -- losing to the Brewers 5-2. At least we fans got to witness Machado's first home run at Dodger Stadium. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider.

Machado gave the fans that stayed something to remember the night by with his ninth-inning homer, but that didn’t make him content in a 5–2 defeat.

“I should’ve hit that a couple innings before,” Machado said. “I had runners in scoring position, got to tie the game up…we’re here to win games.”

This Day in Dodgers History: In 1983 Dodger skipper Walter Alston is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1984 Baseball as an Olympic demonstration sport begins its Olympic tournament at Dodger Stadium. In 2004 the Dodgers receive outfielder Steve Finley and backstop Brent Mayne from the Diamondbacks for Koyie Hill, Reggie Abercrombie and southpaw Bill Murphy. They also traded outfield speedster Dave Roberts to Boston for Henri Stanley. In 2006 the Dodgers traded shortstop César Izturis to the Cubs for future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. In 2008 the Dodgers traded for Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox (including a three team trade with Pittsburgh) for Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris (who goes to the pirates). Pirates outfielder Jason Bay goes to Boston.

Memorabilia Watch: I'm going to try to do this more often. As you know, I love looking at auctions, and I especially enjoy sharing some of my favorites on this blog. Unfortunately, I run into a bunch of things that just miss the cut. So, instead of throwing them into the wastebasket I thought I'd post links up (UniWatch-like) from time to time. Without further ado, check out this Jackie Robinson autographed 1937 Pasadena Junior College yearbook at Iconic Auctions (link here). This next item isn't Dodger related, but it's very cool. Apparently, an estate company found a late-19th century Newsboy cabinet card of Hall of Famer Amos Rusie in an attic (link here). It looks like the real deal, but I am far from an expert. They also have a card of a lesser known player named George Van Haltren (link here).

ICYMI: The Dodgers have just announced the addition of another bobblehead to their giveaway schedule. On Saturday, September 22nd against the Padres fans will receive a Manny Machado bobblehead! WooHoo!
Here's some Dodger history you likely knew nothing about. Per Mark Langill at Dodger Insider; "Remembering Nobe Kawano." He was the Dodgers clubhouse manager for over 30 years.

“Nobe and Yosh were icons in baseball, no question about it,” said Bill Russell, former Dodger manager, outfielder and shortstop, who played in a Los Angeles franchise-record 2,181 games between 1969 and 1986. “When I came to the Majors, Nobe had already had been there for a while and had a reputation of being a no-nonsense guy. He’s the one who gave me my uniform No. 18. He told me, ‘A great man (coach Preston Gomez) had this number, so wear this with pride.’ Over the years, he became a good friend. He did an excellent job in the clubhouse and he prepared the young players about how a big leaguer is supposed to act once he reached the Majors.”

Via Austin Moseley at NewsOK; "Manny Banuelos enjoying a resurgence with the Oklahoma City Dodgers."

“I really like the Dodgers,” Banuelos said as he cracked a smile.

Since signing with the Dodgers in November, Banuelos has gotten in even better shape and is throwing the ball harder than he has in years.

“I feel like my pitches are more effective,” Banuelos said. “My fastball is a little harder than before. And my cutter has been helping me a lot, that's my strikeout pitch.”
