Blog Kiosk: 7/6/2018 - Dodgers Links - First Place, Baby!

Woo Hoo! For the first time this season the Dodgers are in first place.

The trepidation that began at the start of the season is now but a distant memory.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1938 Leo Durocher recorded a "little league" home run that started as an sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning during the All-Star Game played in Cincinnati. Durocher was credited with a bunt single and came around to score on errors by Jimmy Foxx and Joe DiMaggioIn 1979 the Dodgers purchased the contract of pitcher Fernando Valenzuela from Puebla of the Mexican League. In 1980 the Dodgers retired Duke Snider's uniform #4 during that days Old-Timers Day ceremonies at Dodger Stadium. In 2000 Vin Scully is voted the No. 1 sportscaster of the 20th century by members of the American Sportscasters Association.
  • Happy Birthday, Frank KellertWillie Randolph & Germán Rivera!
  • Could this be a real problem? Is the Dodgers ownership nothing but a house of cards? Per Matt Provenzano at Beyond the Boxscore; "How will the Guggenheim investigation and lawsuit affect the Dodgers?"
Where does this leave the baseball world? It leaves them, at the most charitable, with an owner with possibly shaky financials and an SEC investigation, as well allegations they were using falsely-boosted assets to acquire the cash for the sale. I don’t think we’ve seen a fraudulent sale in baseball before, but if that was actually the case, it would make the McCourt ordeal look like kids fighting in the sand—this would bring damages and further debt on to a franchise that was supposedly free of it and its earlier era’s.
This is ultimately one of the side effects of the ever-increasing values of franchises. As teams becomes so expensive that a single person cannot afford it, ownership and asset management groups become appealing.
  • Come on, kid! Don't you wanna be a Dodger? Per Dustin Nosler at Dodgers Digest; "Dodgers’ 2018 1st-round MLB Draft pick J.T. Ginn is going to Mississippi State."
  • ICYMI: The Dodgers made a trade on July 4th. Per Mark Poloshuk at MLB Trade Rumors; "Dodgers Acquire Dylan Floro, Zach Neal From Reds; Designate Daniel Corcino."
  • Per Lisa Johnson at Beyond the Bricks; "Solace After the Storms: Luis Matos endured Hurricanes Irma and Maria before helping bring joy to Puerto Rico through the game of baseball."
“It felt like the world was going to end,” Matos said. “That kind of mentality. You say, ‘well, what is going to happen next?’”
The offseason was anything but traditional for the Oklahoma City Dodgers coach, who serves as the primary third base coach and outfield coach for the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Matos endured two hurricanes within days of returning to his home in Puerto Rico after the Oklahoma City Dodgers’ 2017 season ended in early September.
  • Topps National Baseball Card Day is coming on August 25th. Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily shares a bunch of preview pics; including the Cody Bellinger card on the right. Go here to check out more photos.
  • Per Rob Terranova at MiLB.com; "Drillers' Kremer dazzles in Double-A debut: Dodgers No. 29 prospect whiffs 11 in complete-game shutout."
"I went over a gameplan with my catcher [Keibert Ruiz, the Dodgers' No. 2 prospect] and we established what we wanted to do," he said. "The plan was to just attack and be aggressive.
"I feel like I located all my pitches well. My fastball was working tonight and I went to my off-speed when I needed to. And the defense did a good job of picking me up too. There were two balls right up the middle that [19th-ranked Errol Robinson] made really nice plays on."
  • You should take some time to familiarize yourself with the history of our Double-A club, Tulsa Drillers. Per Jake Cornwell at The Tulsa Voice; "Rains may come: From ‘Black Sunday’ to Greenwood, the Tulsa Drillers have a storied past (and present)."
  • FYI, The Dodgers Double-A club Tulsa Driller will host the All-Star game next season, per Scott Pfeil on twitter:
