Blog Kiosk: 9/14/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

It was great to witness the Dodgers offense explode last night. It was also equally distressing that our pitching was largely ineffective. Fortunately, the Dodgers eked out a victory anyway, 9-7. Per David Wilhelm at MLB.com:
"We did everything we needed to do," Machado said. "We had runners in scoring position and got the runs in. We want to continue doing what we've got to do. Hopefully, we can repeat it."
Machado went 3-for-4 with a double and solo homer in the 7th inning to lead the Dodgers charge.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1945, during an overnight trip between St. Louis and Chicago, the Brooklyn Dodgers train rammed into an gasoline truck, sending flames everywhere. The train engineer and a firefighter were killed. The Dodgers survived without serious injury because the momentum of their section carried it through the burning remains. I had previously written about this incident hereIn 1993 Mike Piazza hit home runs no. 29 and 30 to break the Major League record for homers by a rookie catcher. In 2002 Dodger infielder Chin-Feng Chen becomes the first Taiwan-born player to appear in the major leagues. He would get a pinch-hit walk and score on a double by Mike Kinkade.

  • Per Ramona Shelburne at ESPN; "Matt Kemp is finally home again in LA."
"You walk out and it's just a different smell in LA," he says. "Like the air is ... you just feel good. The sun's always shining, it barely rains. It's just this city, man. The stadium, the atmosphere, the lights. There's nothing like it."

  • Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily shares some preview pics of Topps 2019 Tribute Baseball card set; including a fascinating Duke Snider insert seen on the right. Apparently, Topps has purchased five complete 1951 Topps Red Back set for insertion into this set. This brand will hit stores in late-February.
  • BTW, this coming Saturday, September 15th at the LAFC game against the New England Revolution is the first ever Dodgers Night. Fans who purchase special Dodgers Night tickets will get a LAFC / Dodgers t-shirt. Go here for more information.
  • I wonder if the Dodgers will make a play here. Via Jesse Sanchez at MLB.com; "Highly touted Mesa bros. of Cuba declared FAs: Victor Victor, 22, becomes top international prospect."
The Orioles have $6.5 million in bonus pool money to spend on international prospects, the most money in baseball. The Marlins are next, with $4.3 million, followed by the Rays at $3.6 million and the Dodgers at $2.78 million. The brothers are expected to participate in a showcase for all 30 teams, possibly this month or next.
