Blog Kiosk: 9/18/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

On this team everyone takes their turn to lead. Yesterday, the combined efforts of Joc Pederson and Hyun-Jin Ryu resulted in an 8-2 victory over our rival Rockies. Pederson hit a leadoff homer in the first inning, then drove in two more when he hit his second home run of the evening in the fourth inning. Ryu threw seven scoreless four-hit innings to stymie Colorado. Per Jack Baer at MLB.com:
"Joc, he's just really gotten back to when he was really good," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "Looking out and over, staying in the strike zone and using right-center field to left-center field. Today, that's what he did, took a ball off Gray to left-center and did the same thing against a lefty to right-center field."

Puig batted .429 (9-for-21) with seven runs scored, a double, five home runs, nine RBI, three walks and a stolen base over seven games played to claim his third career NL Player of the Week Award, last winning for the period ending May 18, 2014.  Among his NL counterparts, Puig finished the week first in batting average, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage (1.190) and total bases (25); tied for second in runs scored and extra-base hits (6); third in on-base percentage (.500); and tied for third in hits.  This is the Dodgers’ second Player of the Week award this season, following his All-Star teammate Matt Kemp (June 3rd).
  • The Dodgers named right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin as the Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year and infielder Gavin Lux as the Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year. Check out the Dodgers official press release here.
  • Per Craig Edwards at FanGraphs; "Clayton Kershaw’s Disappearing Fastball."
The fastball has not remained as consistent. The last few years have seen batters swing and make contact on more pitches in the zone and take more pitches for balls. He’s given up 23 homers on roughly 2,000 fastballs the last two seasons after giving up about that many on more than 6,000 pitches in the previous four seasons combined. The fastball hasn’t been as effective, so Kershaw’s response has been the logical one: he’s throwing fewer fastballs.
There are these escalators right behind home plate that go to all the levels. When I was playing, my daughter would come with me to the game, she would bring a friend. I would show up with them at 2 o’clock for a game day, and then they would just run rampant throughout the stadium, playing with everything. Back then, the escalators had these metal panels, and the kids could slide down these things. What they’ve done now is they’ve put little “speed bumps” along this sort of metal railing so you can’t slide any more.
He doesn't want farewell tours and gifts like the boots the Rangers gave to New York Yankees legends Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter on their announced final trips to Arlington.
"I don't like being the center of attention," said Beltre, who did not start Sunday's 7-3 walkoff loss to San Diego. "I don't know how to act; I don't even know what to do with my hands. I don't feel comfortable in those situations. It's just not me."
  • I think this is something that should've happened a long time ago. Via Bill Shaikin at the LA Times; "Minor league baseball players exploring union as they continue to battle low wages."
The USW has been contacted by “dozens” of minor league players, said director of organizing Maria Somma.
“Our union is supportive of anybody who wants to organize or work collectively to try to get some employers to address their issues, which would include minor league baseball players,” Somma said.
“It doesn’t mean that we’re engaged in a full-fledged organizing drive. It doesn’t mean we’re seeking to do representation. What it does mean is that we want to engage with workers in figuring out strategies with which we can help them.”
The bottom line is this: The legislation intended to end the minor league wage debate has instead accelerated it, toward a tipping point where some sort of do-over appears inevitable.
