Blog Kiosk: 11/6/2018 - Dodgers Links - Vote! It's Election Day!

Here's another Spring Training pic from yesteryear, as found on eBay. Dated March 7, 1950 and taken by the legendary Herb Scharfman, we see six Dodgers all vying for an opening at the third base position that upcoming season. Per the description on the reverse:
All Pulling for the Same Job
Vero Beach, FLA... There are plenty of strings attached to the third base job with the Brooklyn Dodgers as these six candidates try the position at the Vero Beach camp of the Bums. Left to right: Bob Morgan, Clarence (Buddy) Hicks, Johnny Jorgenson, Billy Cox, Everett (Rocky) Bridges and Eddie Miksis.
As you may know, rookie Bobby Morgan was the Opening Day starter, but eventually lost the starting job to Billy Cox by mid-season. Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1974 Dodgers hurler Dr. Mike Marshall becomes the first reliever to win a Cy Young award. He had set a MLB record for appearances at 106 and innings pitched for a reliever at 208.1. That's right, a reliever threw over 200 innings and got into over 65% of all Dodger games that season. In 1996 Dodger outfielder Todd Hollandsworth is named the winner of the Rookie of the Year award. He is the fifth consecutive Dodger to win this award and the 16th overall in franchise history. In 2006 Dodger fan Charles Littleton, a 22-year old Saginaw Valley State University student, is TASERed by Saginaw (MI) police when he refuses to remove his Dodger cap during a City Council meeting. He is there to receive extra credit for a sociology class. See a news report hereIn 2014 the Dodgers officially hire Zaidi Farhan to be their new General Manager. He takes over a  position previously held by Ned Colletti

  • No! What's happening? This feels like it came out of nowhere. This morning we get news that our batting couch, Turner Ward, has just been hired by the Cincinnati Reds... What? Per Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors; "Reds Hire Turner Ward As Hitting Coach." You can also see the Red official announced on their twitter feed here. Am I the only one who didn't know this was coming? On another note, we are all going to miss the Puig kisses.
  • Per Kyle Galdeira at MLB.com; "Hernandez soaking up Hawaii experience."
Hernandez explained that while in Hawaii, he spent time with the catchers as they warmed up and game-planned for the upcoming trip to Japan. In addition to getting to know the backstops, Hernandez said that he also attempted to learn more about the way a catcher's mind works -- insight that could come in handy when stepping into the batter's box and anticipating opposing pitch selections.
"I'm not a catcher, but by listening to [them] talk, I feel like I've learned a few different things, and hopefully when I step up to the plate, that changes things a bit," Hernandez said. "Coming here to Hawaii with all the big names we have on the roster, and hearing all the kids call my name because there are so many Dodgers fans here, it's really awesome. I'm getting goosebumps right now as I speak, and it's something that I don't take for granted."
Hawaii is Dodger Country!
  • Orel Hershiser and one-time Dodger manager Davey Johnson are on the Hall of Fame 'Today's Game' ballot, via Liz Roscher at YahooSports. I don't think either of them get in. In my mind, only Lee Smith is worthy. Albert Belle and George Steinbrenner also deserve consideration, but they were both fairly well hated. Furthermore, I hated Will Clark, so I give him a big thumbs down (LOL!).
  • Unsurprisingly, Walker Buehler is one of three finalist for the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year award, via a tweet from BBWAA. Considering the other two ballplayers on the ballot, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Juan Soto, I think his chances of winning are very slim.
  • Topps has announced their annual All-Star Rookie Cup Team this morning and as expected Walker Buehler has been named to the team, per the Topps blog. You should expect a Topps Now card to be issued shortly.
  • This is a very early announcement. Per Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily; "2019 National Baseball Card Day Set for August 10."
  • This is fun stuff, via Starting 9 on twitter. Of course, a Dodgers' hockey jersey already exist (link here):

  • This is the season for giving. If you can spare the dough then you should consider this, via a tweet from AM570:
