Blog Kiosk: 1/14/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

As you know, this weekend Jaime Jarrin received the Pioneer Award at the 16th annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation awards dinner, and our very own Justin Turner was on-hand to present it to him. BTW, former Dodger VP of Amateur Scouting, Logan White, was also honored at the scouts dinner - being one of eight scouts honored.

  • In case you're interested, Eric Longenhagen at FanGraphs takes a closer look at the two prospects we traded away for Russell Martin -- Ronny Brito and Andrew Sopko.
Sopko is the more likely of the two to wear a major league uniform, as his skills are constantly desired among teams seeking to build starting pitching depth at Double and Triple-A in the event of big league injuries. He’s an efficient strike-thrower with spot starter’s stuff; a fastball that resides in the 88-92 range, an average changeup that flashes above, and a slurvy breaking ball with enough depth that it will be an issue for hitters who struggle to square up break.
“There’s something about putting that Dodger uniform on that can bring out some magic in you, and hopefully I can get some of that magic this year,” Martin said. “The team is great. I just want to be a part of it, and just win.”

“I’ve always been a competitor. My whole life I’ve loved to compete. I don’t want this to be my last year. Coming off a year where I felt like I kind of underperformed, especially offensively, I’m looking for a bounceback year, and I’m looking for a change. I’ve never won a championship and I’m still hungry for that. I’ve gotten close a few times, but I’ve never been to the big dance, and that is something that keeps me motivated. It would definitely be nice to finally get a ring. I know the team in LA got really close last year, and they’re hungry for it, too. That’s very exciting for me and definitely helps me push a little harder in the weight room and gives me a little more gas in the tank.”
Meaux Landry -- "It's probably the best raw power we've ever seen at a workout," Gasparino told Dodgers Insider. "It would be better than any power in our system now, based on some of the measurements we have. If you go through exit velocity, he has better exit velocity than any minor or Major Leaguer we have in our organization. He's 6–4 and he's 225 pounds. It's just a fun guy to watch, because he has extreme power."
