Blog Kioks: 2/22/2019 - Dodgers Links and News - Some Odds and Ends

So, when does the ping pong tournament start?

  • This Day in Dodgers History: First, I just want to mention that today in 1980 was the "Miracle on Ice" -- when a ragtag group of American college kids defeated the heavily favored USSR in hockey during the Winter Olympics. In 2009 the Dodgers signed free agent infielder Orlando Hudson to a one-year $3.4 million contract. In 2014 the Dodgers signed Cuban infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena to a five-year $25 million contract.

  • Spring Training Notes: Right-handed pitcher Daniel Corcino has been named the starter for Saturday’s Cactus League opener against the White Sox. Also scheduled to take the mound on Saturday are Jaime Schultz, Kevin Quackenbush, Josh Sborz, Stetson Allie, Josh Smoker and Joe Broussard. BTW, Orel Hershiser arrived at Camelback Ranch yesterday. He will be broadcasting this coming Saturday's game. Furthermore, Raul IbaƱez arrived at camp, as well.
  • This is a very nice gesture. The Dodgers announced yesterday that the club will honor the legacy of Don Newcombe with a commemorative number “36” patch on their uniforms. Furthermore, on April 27th he will be honored during pregame ceremonies, be inducted into the Legends of Dodger Baseball, and they will be giving away a commemorative bobblehead to fans.
“Don Newcombe played a major role on and off the field for the Dodgers and we want to honor his legacy to our organization and all of baseball by recognizing him throughout the 2019 season,” said Kasten.  The patch will be on the Dodger jersey beginning Opening Day.
Robinson pressed on with his vision for Freedom National Bank, which became one of the largest black-owned banks of the time. The black community eventually embraced the institution, endearingly calling it “Our Bank.” Clarence Funnye, leader of the Congress of Racial Equality, wrote of the bank: “Before Freedom National, you went into a white bank with the distinct impression you went in with what you had in your hand, begging the powers that be and generally you were turned down. With Freedom, the community looks less like a colony, less of an arena of exploitation.”
“When you get that close two years in a row, it borderline drives you insane,” Turner said. “You’re just psychotic about trying to finish it. So the drive is even greater than it was last year.”
...
“That’s the hard part — staying positive about how good of a year we had the last two years,” Turner said. “Because the perception is ‘We lost the World Series twice, so it was a (bad) year.’ But at the same time, we lost the World Series. So it wasn’t a failure.”
  • Uh-Oh. Via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Kershaw gets day off after frustrating 'pen: Roberts won't 'overplay' early discouraging spring practice."
“I don’t want to overplay it, because I’m going to give him some days off this spring anyway," said Roberts. "He didn’t say he was hurt, just that it didn’t feel as good as he wanted to feel. Just some frustration. He worked really hard this offseason. I know it’s vague, but right now there’s nothing more to it than that.”
