Blog Kiosk: 3/11/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Baseball was played at Dodger Stadium this weekend as a part of the College Baseball Classic. In Sunday's prime match-up between the Bruins and Trojans, UCLA came out on top by rallying from a four run deficit to defeat the USC, 7-5.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1953 the Dodgers play their first Spring Training game at Holman Stadium at Dodgertown, Vero Beach, Florida -- defeating the A's, 4-2. In 1972 Dodger Hall of Famer Zack Wheat died at the age of 83. He slashed a lifetime .317/.367/.450/.817 with 2,884 hits and 1,248 RBI's, and still holds many Dodger records. He currently leads the franchise in hits (2,804), total bases (4,003), singles (2,038), doubles (464) and triples (171).

  • RIP, Julia Ruth. Via Blake Schuster at Yahoo Sports; "Julia Ruth Stevens, daughter of Babe Ruth, died at 102."
  • Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Kersh, Buehler, Seager will be 'ready' for opener."
“Ready is relative to what anyone feels is ready,” said Roberts. “Is it the conventional buildup both those guys are used to? Probably not, if you look at the calendar. But whatever decision we make we feel is best for the players and our club.”
In other words, just because Kershaw and Buehler are expected to be “ready” to start the season doesn’t mean they will, because the Dodgers have enough starting depth to leave one or both in extended spring training to build arm strength for additional innings. Or not.
“Right now, we don’t have to make that decision,” Roberts said.
"(It's) a joke," Hill said. "It's sad that they're doing that, honestly. I'm definitely for change. Are there more efficient ways to play the game? Sure. ... But that's not the way the game was designed, the way the game was structured."
It could be a while before any of these ideas reach the majors, but another pace-of-play initiative - the pitch clock - is being tested in spring training and could be implemented this year. Hill spoke out against pitch clocks last month, calling the concept "ridiculous."
“It’s fun to be out there with my body feeling good,” said Martin. “I just need more reps. I feel confident in my swing.”
Kelly threw a perfect six-pitch inning in his first game action since March 3, after which his back tightened while helping prepare a team dinner.
...
He then said this about Julio Urias: “He executes pitches,” said Martin. “He stays in his mechanics. Young pitchers tend to be a little bit more erratic, he’s just got great mechanics and he trusts his delivery and repeats his delivery. He’s not afraid to throw strike one, with the fastball or breaking ball. He just seems he’s a perfectionist and wants to keep getting better. He’s one of those kids with the combination of talent but also the attitude of a guy not scared and will never be scared. It’s a good combination.”
“Last year, it was bitcoin,” Stripling said Thursday. “This year, it’s marijuana stocks.”
Marijuana is banned under baseball’s drug policy. But, as the legalization of medicinal and recreational marijuana spreads across the United States, a player can cash in on a substance he cannot use.
