  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1941 teammates Joe Medwick and Pee Wee Reese wear protective headgear during a spring exhibition game in Havana, Cuba. They placed plastic inserts -- dubbed a “Brooklyn Safety Cap” -- inside their hats. Both players had missed significant time the previous season due to head injuries; including a scare that sent Medwick to the hospital for fear of a cracked skull. You can see a patent design for the cap on the right, via Baseball Hall of Fame. • Per Alex Hutton at the Loyolan; "Former Dodger speaks on baseball and racism."
The most powerful story that (Al) Ferrara, who is white, told regarding race was also a story from spring training. After a day game, he and a black teammate tried to eat at one of Ferrara’s favorite restaurants, only to be told that the restaurant would not serve a black man. The teammate took Ferrara to a different restaurant instead, where they ate dinner and had a great time. After this night, Ferrara began questioning the systemic issues in society that allowed these events to take place.
“How come he can’t eat at a restaurant I want to take him to, but I can eat at a restaurant that he wants to take me to?” Ferrara recalled thinking.

  • Per Mike DiGiovanna at the LA Times; "Brock Stewart prepared to endure another minor league odyssey in Dodgers' system."
“I mean, I was looking forward to being more stable, for sure,” Stewart said. “Then I step back and think about how grateful and blessed I am to be pitching for the Dodgers organization and be competing for a championship every year.
“I definitely wouldn’t rather be in any other organization. I get that some guys have to do what I’ve done the past three years, and if I have to do it for another year, I’m gonna do it. I’m not going to say I love it, but I’ll do it.”
“If I’ve seen one minor league player who has grown the most in the offseason, it’s DJ Peters,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this week. “When talking about a swing change, a mechanical cleanup, he’s as sound as he’s ever been. Now you have to let it play into a season and see where it takes him.”
