Blog Kiosk: 4/1/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

What an amazing Opening Weekend. Not only did the Dodgers start things off right by winning the first series of the year, but they did it by eclipsing several records.
  • On Thursday they walloped eight homers to set a Major League record for homers on Opening Day.
  • On Friday they played the longest regular season game at Dodger Stadium in franchise history -- at six hours and five minutes.
  • They shattered a LA record for most runs scored for a four-game series -- at 42 runs.
  • When Russell Martin pitched on Sunday he became the first full-time position player to record a 1-2-3 ninth inning for a team win since 1963 -- by Willie Smith of the Tigers.

Since returning, Turner has worn the EvoShield pad, which is a fusion of fiberglass resin that begins as a gel and, when exposed to oxygen, hardens to a customized protective shell that diffuses the energy from impact. Even though Andriese's pitch was a changeup, it was clocked at 86.6 mph and it struck Turner with enough force to fracture a bone.
“Right on the spot,” said Turner. “I’ll probably never play without [the shield] again.”
Keeping with MLB’s international flair for the 2019 season, there will be three additional items, one from Japan, one from Mexico and one from London, all of which are hosting MLB games this season. The L.A. event is happening April 26-28 at Magic Box. The London and NYC dates will be announced later in the season.
  • I really hate this. Per ESPN; "Man severely hurt in incident at Dodgers game." This happened on Friday, and if you have any information about this violent act please contact the police. There is also a Go Fund Me page to help this man and his family out. Go here.
"Last night, an altercation occurred suddenly between two men who were leaving the stadium," the Dodgers said in a statement Saturday. "One of the men was injured as a result of the altercation. A witness immediately reported the incident to stadium personnel, and emergency medical technicians were promptly dispatched to provide medical assistance at the scene. The matter is now being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Dodgers are cooperating fully with the investigation."
The man, identified as Rafael Reyna by his wife, Christel, is in the hospital and on life support after he suffered a fractured skull among other head injuries. Christel Reyna told KABC that she was on the phone with her husband as he left the game against the Diamondbacks and said all she heard was Rafael Reyna arguing with someone and then a loud cracking sound.
  • Check this out. Via a SeatGeek, they map out Baseball fandom across the country based upon the behavior of MLB shoppers on their website. Surprisingly, Dodger territory is huge. It stretches all the way into Utah and Wyoming.
  • You may have heard that there was a large sports memorabilia theft last week in Arizona that saw numerous Hall of Fame signed Baseballs disappearing; including a Babe Ruth ball. Now, there is a reward available. Per Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily; "Reward Offered for Baseballs Stolen from Don & Charlie’s."
