Blog Kiosk: 5/13/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Ryu is an 'Ace' right now. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I can’t say enough about Hyun-Jin and what he’s done for us,” Roberts said. “He’s off to obviously a tremendous start. To watch him work as a technician, it was masterful. It really was.”
Hyun-Jin came so close to throwing a no-hitter last night. He went 8.1 scoreless innings before giving up a double to first baseman Gerardo Parra, and now has a scoreless innings streak of 24 innings.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1947 the famous 'embrace that shook the baseball world' occurred at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The Dodgers, facing the Reds for the first time this season at their home stadium, witness a barrage of racial slurs directed at Jackie Robinson. Team captain Pee Wee Reese, seeing this, engages with Jackie on the field and then put his arm around his shoulder, a gesture that stuns and silences the crowd (or so the story goes). In 1952 Vin Scully experienced something incredible. As a youth he dreamed of being a broadcaster. A classmate named Larry Miggins shared a similar dream with him. He wanted to play Major League Baseball. So on this day Miggins, now a outfielder with the Cardinals, was at-bat with Vin Scully calling the game for the Dodgers in Brooklyn, and proceeded to hit his first career home run in front of his close friend. Per an SI story (2016):
“I remember I said, ‘Larry, when we get out of here, what do you want to do?’ And he said, ‘I’d love to be a big league ballplayer.’ “And I said, ‘I wonder what those odds are.’ And then I said, ‘Well, you know, I’d like to be big league broadcaster. I wonder what those odds are.’ “And then I said, ‘How about this one for a long shot: How about you play, I broadcast, you hit a home run?’ And we said, ‘The odds, no one would be able to calculate that!’”
“He’s going to go out there and get more playing time,” said manager Dave Roberts. “For us to try to give him an opportunity, a runway, has just been difficult. So … it’s a good thing for him.”
The exceptional results Ryu has been getting owe a considerable debt to his changeup and cutter. The former, which he throws 22.0% of the time, averages just 79.1 mph according to Pitch Info, giving him more than 10 mph of separation from the, uh, heater. It falls out of the zone more often than not, batters can’t resist chasing it, and when they make contact, they tend to hit it on the ground.
  • Here's where the Dodgers and hockey intersect. Per Corey Miller at KSDK5 -- "Dodgers organist plays 'Gloria' during David Freese at-bat." The song 'Gloria' by Laura Branigan has become the rally song for the St. Louis Blues during their current Stanley Cup playoff run.
  • Old friend James Loney retired on Friday, per Steve Adams at MLB Trade Rumors. I still remember when he first came up to the big leagues as a Dodger -- amidst screams of "Free James Loney" by Dodger fans everywhere (especially online).
  • Here's another old friend alert. Per Jack Baer at Yahoo Sports -- "Edwin Jackson is about to play for his MLB-record 14th team: Let's rank them all."
  • This is fascinating. Per Cassandra Negley at Yahoo Sports -- "Paul Lo Duca has an interesting story about Joe West, the strike zone and a '57 Chevy."
“[Wagner’s] like, ‘Hey, Joe’s behind the plate. Set up a couple more inches inside. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Joe hates me.’ He’s like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no. Joe loves me.’
“I go, ‘He hasn’t given us the corner all day.’ He’s like, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ He literally throws 10 pitches and strikes out three guys. Joe rings up all three guys. Eight out of the nine pitches were at least 3 to 4 inches inside, not even close. Guys were throwing bats and everything. Joe walks off the field.”
Palatt says he approached a Dodgers employee for a voucher for a miniature souvenir bat for a student that was accompanying him to the game. That’s when, he claims, a Dodgers security guard “violently grabbed” him from behind and “wrapped his arm around” his neck.
He claims the security guard then slammed into a fence, fracturing his rib, and accused Palatt of resisting arrest. According to Palatt, several other security personnel came to the scene, forced his arms behind his back, and led him away.
